The following procedure explains how to download an ISO image from Symantec's FileConnect website to a local computer (such as a Windows personal computer) and reimage an appliance with the downloaded ISO. You need your maintenance serial number to access FileConnect. You can find your serial number on the license certificate you received with your initial purchase or on your Version Upgrade Notification. If you need help locating your serial number, contact Symantec Customer Care.
Due to the bandwidth required to install an ISO image through the IPMI network, the ISO installation works best if the appliance and the remote computer are located at the same physical site. If you try to remotely reimage an appliance over a WAN, the process can fail. Therefore, Symantec does not recommend performing an ISO reimage over a WAN.
If a firewall exists between the appliance and the remote devices that manage the appliance, certain ports must be open for this procedure. For a list of the affected ports, refer to the following tech note on the Symantec Support website:
To download an ISO image and reimage a NetBackup 5030 appliance
From a local personal computer, use a browser to access Symantec FileConnect.
On the Enter Serial Number page, log in with the maintenance serial number that is associated with your appliance. The maintenance serial number begins with an M and is not the serial number of the physical appliance (e.g. SYM0123456).
Continue to follow the FileConnect prompts until you have downloaded the new Deduplication Appliance Software ISO image. If you need help with the FileConnect website, click the FAQ link on the black header at the top of the page. This FAQ includes a user guide and frequently asked questions.
The final step in the download process asks you to specify a destination directory on the local PC for the software download.
To prevent technical or service issues with your appliance, ensure that you download the correct ISO image for your appliance model and series. These images are for use only with the correct physical appliance type. If you have purchased a 52xx Appliance that is under a current Symantec Support contract, you are only authorized to download and install on that appliance the ISO image for the 52xx Appliance. If you have purchased a 50xx Appliance that is under a Support contract, you are only authorized to download and install on that appliance the ISO image for the 50xx Appliance. Use of any ISO image that is not authorized for the correct physical appliance type may cause errors and malfunctions, and may void the warranty rights that Symantec provides for that physical unit.
Start the IPMI web console from the local personal computer.
Navigate to the Remote Control tab.
Click on Console Redirection on the left panel.
Click Launch Console.
When the JViewer console launches, select Device > Redirect ISO.
From the Open pop-up window that appears, choose the ISO image that you want to install and click Open.
Restart the appliance as follows:
Monitor the restart process in the JViewer console window. When the splash screen appears, immediately press F6 to enter the boot menu.
You only get a window of a few seconds to perform this task. If you miss the window, the operating system loads, and you can't access the boot menu.
In the Please select boot device window, select Virtual CDROM 1.00 and press Enter.
Select Install from the Symantec install screen and press Enter.
Monitor the installation process in the JViewer window.
The installation process can take 40 minutes or more.
The IPMI ISO installation is sensitive to the quality of the network connection. If an installation failure occurs, try the installation again. If the problem persists, try to improve the quality of the IPMI network connection. You can also burn the ISO image onto a DVD and install it with a USB DVD-ROM drive that you physically connect to the appliance.
After the welcome message appears, log into the NetBackup Appliance Shell Menu as sysadmin.
Type the password at the Password: prompt. By default, the password is P@ssw0rd.
After you type the password, the system responds with the shell menu.
Type logout and press Enter to log out of the shell menu.
Refer to the Deduplication Appliance Software Getting Started Guide to configure the software.
