The thin host like its name suggests is a host with a very small foot print that can be installed for a temporary connection to a target machine. The thin host does not have all of the features that the full installation of the pcAnywhere host has and thus saves a considerable amount of space. In this how to we will discuss creating and deploying a windows thin host. The steps for creating a linux and Mac thin host are the same but deployment will be slightly different depending on the
Thin Host configuration
1. On a machine with a full install of pcAnywhere launch pcAnywhere and select the Quick Deploy and Connect screen on the pcAnywhere Manager menu.
2. In the Actions menu select Configure for Windows .
3. On the first Windows Thin Host Configuration Wizard screen Click Next .
4. On the Second Windows Thin Host Configuration Wizard screen enter
- a. Host name: can be blank if you want the Windows name to be used as the host name.
b. Authentication type: Choose from pcAnywhere, NT or Ldap. For this example we are using pcAnywhere.
c. Encryption level select an appropriate level.
d. Determine if the thin host should run as a service.
e. If you want the thin host available if you get disconnected or you disconnect then don’t check the Cancel thin host after the remote session ends check box
f. Click Next.
5. On the Third Windows Thin Host Configuration Wizard screen enter appropriate information for your host
- a. User name.
c. Confirm password.
d. Click Next.
6. On the Fourth Windows Thin Host Configuration Wizard screen
- a. Check the box I have a host license for each target computer
b. Click Save to Disk
c. Create a folder like your desk top called ThinHost
d. Save this Thin Host in that folder as ThinHost click Save
7. Click OK.
8. Click Finish.
Thin Host Deployment
1. The Thin Host can be deployed directly from the Quick Deploy and Connect screen once it has been configured.
2. Type the IP or machine name in the Computer name or TCP/IP address: field and click Connect Alternatively you could look for the computer in the list of machines on the network and double click it from the list.
3. You will be prompted to provide credentials that have OS level rights to copy and execute the ThinHost files. The user name will be entered in the following form Domain\user
- a. If using the local administrator account enter it this way. Localhost\administrator
b. Enter Password:
4. The thin host files will then start to copy to the other machine
Note: You may receive an error at this step because part or all of the networking requirements are not available for making a connection to the required administrative shares. If you receive an error at this step please go to the troubleshooting thin host deployment at the end of the How To.
5. After the files have been deployed and executed then the prompt for Host Login comes up this is the credentials for the host that was set up earlier.

6. You are now connected and notice that some of features under session manager and remote control are not available options when connected to the thin host.

Troubleshooting Thin Host Deployment.
* Test that you have connectivity from your remote machine to the host machine's administrative share.
1. From the Start menu on your remote go to the Run Line and type \\your_host_machine_name\c$
2. You may be prompted for credentials to the c$ share. Use an administrative user name and password.
Once authenticated the contents of MacineOne's C drive will be available. If you are not able to get to the Administrative share then see the troubleshooting steps below.
* If working with OS's later than Windows XP make sure that the remote registry is enabled on the system that the thin host is going to be deployed to.
The windows firewall could be a problem confirm that the windows firewall is disabled or allowances for print and file sharing have been made.
Simple file sharing set to the default setting of a windows XP Machine that has not been joined to the domain can cause problems.
You may have received an error like this one that is caused by having simple file sharing enabled.
1. To disable simple file sharing open My Computer and select Tools > Folder Options..
2. Select the View tab and scroll to the bottom of the Advanced settings box. Look for the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) option and then uncheck it.

Now that the simple file sharing is disabled test that you have connectivity from your remote machine to your host machine's administrative share.
1. From the Start menu on the remote machine go to the Run Line and type \\your_host_machine_name\c$
2. You may be prompted for credentials to the s$ share. Use an administrative user name and password.
Once you are able to get to the c$ share you can then return to the deploying the Thin Host
