Issue



Applications with large installation paths fail to execute through a Managed Software Delivery Policy or Quick Delivery Task.

For example SQL 2008 has an excessive folder structure in the install package, and will fail with default settings due to the path growing too large.


Error



On Win7 Client Error: The file name would be too long for destination folder. .... try a location that has a shorter path.


Environment



Software Management 7.0 (Framework SP4, Solution SP2)

Software Management Solution 7.1.1

ITMS 7.1 SP1


Cause



Some applications will fail to install if the SMF default download location directory structure grows to long, starting at  C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\SoftwareManagement\Software Delivery\(Long Guid Folder)\Cache\


Solution



This is actually a Microsoft issue
Title: You cannot back up a file in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7 if the path length is longer than 260 characters

To avoid this issue, choose Advanced options and change the default download path to a short path (such as C:\Packages\).

By changing this, the download and execution will have a much shorter relative path to work from.

Two Options to implement.

a.  Globally we can change the download location under Settings > All Settings > Software > Managed Delivery Settings > Download tab.
      Select "Location on destination computer" and enter the path to the folder you want to download the files to.
 

b.  To change the download location on each Managed Software Delivery policy click on the "Advanced options" button on the Software tab of the Policy Rules/Actions web part.
      On the Download tab select "Location on destination computer" and enter the path to the folder you want to download the files to.
