How to create a custom SDR CD and recover a server using the custom SDR CD.


Solution



Simplified System Protection (SSP) backup

 

The first step is to run a backup of a server with all critical systems selected, a Simplified System Protection (SSP) backup.

The green button indicates that the backup job is going to be run and includes all necessary components for a disaster recovery.

When the backup is complete the job log will show that the .DR file has been created and shows the location of the file.
Without the .DR file an SDR cannot be done.

It is highly recommended that a copy of the .DR file is placed on another server other than the backup server.

Creating a custom SDR disk

A custom SDR disk can be created for the machine that was just backed up.  
A custom SDR does not have to be created but is highly recommended especially if there is special hardware and drivers installed.

Click on the BE Icon, choose Configuration and Settings and then Create Disaster Recovery Disk.

The wizard will start and give you the option to choose a server other than the one you are on where Backup Exec is installed. Click next to continue.

Backup Exec 2012 will come with two SDR disks or .ISO files, one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit. Browse to the location where the SDR DVD is located.

NOTE: Backup Exec SDR ISO files can be downloaded from Symantec Fileconnect or BackupExec.com Trailware site.

This screen will allow the selection of the server that a Custom SDR Disk needs to be created for. In this situation there is only one server backed up, Click in the box by the server and click the Next button.

The Custom SDR CD has the disaster recovery information file (*.DR file) for the selected server. This includes Server name, when the last backup was run and the volumes that were protected.

On this screen drivers for Network cards or storage controllers can be included on the recovery disk. This is one of the benefits of a Custom SDR Disk.

This screen allows you to select the location that the SDR .ISO file will be created.

Start up Options can be specified on this screen for the SDR Disk.

This screen will allow you to review your settings prior to creating the SDR .ISO image.

Recover a computer using SDR

The server has been backed up and the custom SDR CD has been created and burned to disk.

The next step is to Boot the server that is being recovered from the custom CD that was created.

The first interactive screen that comes up is the License Agreement Screen. Once that is accepted the SDR will continue and start networking services (If Starting Networking services fails to start Use the Utility menu option and select Load a Driver; for further assistance refer to www.symantec.com/docs/TECH154426)

When the services are done loading the following screen will come up. Click on the "Recover This Computer" link.

In this scenario the backup was done to a B2D folder on a Remote Backup Exec Server.

Enter the Backup Exec server where the files are backed up to.

Enter the server name, domain, User name and Password.

The network adapter can be configured as well as specific drivers if necessary.

Select the server and the point-in-time to be recovered.

The disaster recovery information file which is contained in the Custom SDR CD is not used in this situation. The latest disaster recovery information is sent from Backup Exec server when connecting to a remote Backup Exec server.


Un-checking the “Recover the entire computer…” option, will only allow the D: drive to be de-selected since it is not needed to do a Simplified Disaster Recovery.

Only the C: and System State for this system needs to be restored.

The next screen displays the original volume layout of the server that was backed up. Clicking the Preview button will show us a different view.

The Advanced Disk Configuration button will allow the disk layout to be modified to accommodate larger disks so the volumes can be increased in size.

Storage controller drivers can also be added at this time.

The Recovery Summary shows the server that will be recovered as well as the credentials used, the drives and System State that will be recovered.

When the Recover button is pressed the recovery begins. 
In some instances the option to "Erase hard disks..." should be chosen.

When the restore is finished restoring the files and System State it will then go through a Hardware Discovery.

After discovering the hardware it will install the devices for the system.

The SDR process is now complete. On this screen you can view the Hardware Discovery log and the Recover this computer wizard log.  

Clicking the finish button takes you back to the main DR screen

When the system reboots it will run a quick Setup and then reboot again. Once the second reboot is complete the system is fully restored and ready to login.

The SDR is now complete your computer's operating system is now restored to a pre-disaster state. Your data files have been restored, except those protected by Backup Exec database agents.

Once the Exit button is clicked, the Yes button can be clicked to exit the SDR wizard and restart the server.
