Symantec Scan Engine (SSE) 5.2.14 web console is not shown if the client-side Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is 1.7

Issue



Symantec Scan Engine (hereafter SSE) 5.2.14 supports both Java Runtime Environment 1.6/1.7 and Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or later. When the client-side web browser's loads JRE 1.7 the following error message ensues and the expected web console is not shown.

" To view Symantec Scan Engine administrator interface, please install Java Runtime Enviornment(JRE) 5.0 Update 6 or later."

The Internet Explorer (hereafter IE) 6 or gteater installed on the same host with the same JRE does show the console.

Environment



This issue does affect SPE7.0.x.

This behavior has been confirmed reproducible under the following environment:

Server side:

  • Red Hat Linux 5.x (x86)
  • SSE5.2.14
  • JRE 1.6.0_25
  • Web browser: a local FireFox 17.0 browser loads the web console OK

Client side:

  • Windows
  • Web browser: FireFox 18.0.2, 19.0
  • JRE 1.7.0_9, 1.7.0-10, 1.7.0_13
  • Java cache settings: Disabled (do not cache)

This behavior is NOT confirmed with the following environment:

Client side:

  • Windows
  • Web browser: FireFox 18.0.2, 19.0
  • JRE 1.6.0_25
  • Java cache settings: Disabled (do not cache)

Solution



Workaround:

  • Upgrade to SPE7.0.x and later, which does not have this problem.
  • Downgrade the client-side JRE to 1.6 with FireFox.
  • With JRE1.7, use Internet Explorer 6 or greater until another workaround is confirmed.
