Messaging Gateway rejects valid SMTP authentication attempts

Issue



When attempting to relay a message through Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) using the SMTP Authentication feature, the attempt is rejected with a "500 5.5.2 unrecognized command" error.

Cause



The authentication type parameter to the AUTH command is not all upper case. Lower case or mixed case values will generate an unrecognized command error. The only authetication type that SMG will accept is the all upper case "LOGIN".

Solution



This issue has been addressed with SMG 10.5.0 and later.
