Issue

Proxy servers and perimeter firewalls can prevent clear communications with the required websites used for installation and activation of clients, this can cause errors during and after installation. In these circumstances it is necessary to verify that there are no blocks between the client and the sites. These sites are not pingable, however when browsing to them in a web browser they will display particular responses, this document will show examples of what to expect when confirming open communications to each of the installation and activation URLs with different browsers.

Solution

Installation and Activation URLs

  • https://ins.spn.com
  • https://message.s2.spn.com
  • http://sasmain.symantec.com
  • http://sas1alt.symantec.com
  • http://ssaw.symantec.com
  • http://siaw.symantec.com

Confirming Connectivity

To confirm that communications with the required sites is not blocked, browse to the sites using a web browser, the sites should display the following:

https://ins.spn.com

  • Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome:

https://message.s2.spn.com

  • Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome:

http://sasmain.symantec.com

  • Firefox and Google Chrome:
  • Internet Explorer:

Note: If sasmain.symantec.com resolves but connectivity issues persist, also check http://sasmain.symantec.com/72774/6JXM0010/AB/00KY003N/CCE3E7D9880B18FE:1120

  • This page should resolve the following (with a couple of differences in the second line) in all browsers:
    FO=0;
    ECOMURL=https://ssaw.symantec.com/?SASSERVER=sasmain.symantec.com&TRANSID=/72778/OYey2AAAUZCD3C0A/003N001000KY&TID=OYey2AAAUZCD3C0A&SKU=754&VID=131;
    STATUS=16;
    TRANS=OYey2AAAUZCD3C0A;

  • Firefox and Google Chrome:
  • Internet Explorer:

Potential Solutions to Communications Blocks

  • If a proxy server or hardware firewall is used in the environment then white-listing the sites by hostname for ports 80 and 443 will be required to ensure clear communication.
  • If the systems experiencing communication issues are not behind a proxy or firewall then flushing the DNS cache and making sure the LAN settings proxy option is disabled in Internet Explorer locally on the system may clear communication issues.
  • If communications remain blocked further research will be required to determine what networking components of the environment could be blocking communications.
