Issue

DFSR backups exit with Status 0 but contain only system state data

DFSR backups exit with Status 1 but contain only system state data

DFS shares are discarded by bpbkar when System State Backup: Allow legacy backup is enabled.  No indication is given to end user that DFSR file list selections were not backed up.

Error

No error given, backup appears to complete successfully with status 0

Examination of the bpbkar log shows Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\DfsrReplicatedFolders being removed due to Legacy SystemState backup being enabled

14:47:41.726 [9992.5600] <2> _fix_system_state: INF - Legacy SystemState backup is enabled, removing: Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\DfsrReplicatedFolders\DFSBX03\BUNNY\

Environment

Server 2008, 2008 R2, Server 2012

Cause

DFS shares are discarded by bpbkar when System State Backup: Allow legacy backup is enabled.

Solution

Check if System State Backup: Allow legacy backup is enabled.

<INSTALLPATH>\NetBackup\bin>w2koption -backup -display

Output will be similar to below with legacy backup enabled:

NetBackup Backup Options
-----------------------------------------
System State Backup: Allow legacy backup
       Ignore Unresolved Volumes: D:
       KMS Activated Server Backup: Disabled
Snapshot Provider Type: VSS Selects Provider

To resolve this issue set disallow legacy backup:

<INSTALLPATH>\NetBackup\bin>w2koption -backup -system_state 0

<INSTALLPATH>\NetBackup\bin>w2koption -backup -display

Output should resemble below with legacy backup disabled

NetBackup Backup Options
-----------------------------------------
System State Backup: Disallow legacy backup
       Ignore Unresolved Volumes: D:
       KMS Activated Server Backup: Disabled
Snapshot Provider Type: VSS Selects Provider

Backups should now include the DFSR share folders.
