How to use VXTRACE.EXE to modify the trace level of the vxisis.log

Solution

VXTRACE.EXE is a utility that will modify the level of logging detail in vxisis.log.
  • In versions through 5.1SP2, the default setting for vxisis.log is "6 - Error" and it provides basic details.
  • In versions from 6.0 and later, the default setting is "5 - Warning".
  • A setting of "4 - Info" provides additional details and is used for troubleshooting purposes.

For versions 4.1 through 4.3

The VXTRACE.EXE utility must be downloaded using the link below. In those ealier versions VXTRACE has the following two options:

vxtrace set tracelevel=<n>
"vxtrace set" takes effect on the current session of vxsvc service only. If the VERITAS Enterprise Administrator (VxSvc) service is restarted, the trace level returns to the trace level set in the registry.
     HKLM\Software\Veritas\VxSvc\CurrentVersion\Tracing\vxisis

vxtrace reg tracelevel=<n>
"vxtrace reg" changes the trace level in the registry.  For this change to take effect, the VERITAS Enterprise Administrator service must be stopped and restarted. The VERITAS Enterprise Administrator service can be restarted through the services applet or through the command line by typing the following:

1. net stop vxob
2. net start vxob

Note: Stopping the VERITAS Enterprise Administrator services may cause cluster resources to report faulted. It is  recommended that this service be recycled during a maintenance window or on nodes not hosting any resources. The location of vxisis.log is by default:
\Program Files\VERITAS\VERITAS Object Bus\logs.

SYNTAX AND USAGE:
vxtrace <set> <reg> <tracelevel=n>

Values of tracelevels:
1 - Info1
2 - Info2
3 - Info3
4 - Info
5 - Warning
6 - Error

Example 1: To temporarily register the level of tracing to 4 at the command prompt enter:

vxtrace set tracelevel=4 or vxtrace set 1=4

Example 2: To permanently change the level of tracing to 4, enter this at  the command prompt:

net stop vxob
vxtrace reg tracelevel=4 or vxtrace reg 1=4
net start vxob

For versions 5.x:

VXTRACE is included in Storage Foundation for Windows at the following default locations:
SFW 5.0.x
Windows x86 systems:
C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.0\
Windows x64 systems:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.0\
SFW 5.1.x
Windows x86 systems:
C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.1\
Windows x64 systems
C:\Program Files (x86)\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager 5.1\

SYNTAX AND USAGE:

vxtrace set isislog level=<#|default> [reg=<y|n>]
This command alters trace level of VEA/ISIS log dynamically.

level:    specifies the trace level to be set as current trace level where '#' can be

                2 - Info2
                3 - Info3
                4 - Info
                5 - Warning
                6 - Error (default)
reg:      specifies whether to update the trace level in registry or not
'y' indicates 'yes' to update the registry
'n' indicates 'no' to update the registry

Examples:

    vxtrace set isislog level=default reg=n
This command will set the trace level to 'Warning'(5) and will not update
        the registry
.

    vxtrace set isislog level=4 reg=y
This command will set the trace level to 'Info'(4) and will update
        the registry
.

       Default registry key:

32 bit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\VRTSobc\pal33\Agents\StorageAgent\Tracing\vxisis

64 bit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Veritas\VRTSobc\pal33\Agents\StorageAgent\Tracing\vxisis

32 bit:
  \Program Files\VERITAS\VERITAS Object Bus\logs
64 bit:
  \Program Files (x86)\Veritas\Veritas Object Bus\Logs

For versions 6.x:

VXTRACE is included in Storage Foundation for Windows at the following default location:
SFW 6.0.x
 C:\Program Files\Veritas\Veritas Volume Manager

SYNTAX AND USAGE:

vxtrace set isislog level=<#|default> [reg=<y|n>]

'n' indicates 'no' to update the registry

Examples:

    vxtrace set isislog level=default reg=n
This command will set the trace level to 'Warning'(5) and will not update
        the registry
.

    vxtrace set isislog level=4 reg=y
This command will set the trace level to 'Info'(4) and will update
        the registry
.

       Default registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\VxSvc\CurrentVersion\Tracing\vxisis

For this change to take effect, the VERITAS Enterprise Administrator service must be stopped and restarted. The VERITAS Enterprise Administrator service can be restarted through the services applet or through the command line by typing the following:

1. net stop vxsvc
2. net start vxsvc
