DOCUMENTATION: How to change the logging level and other unified log settings for the Veritas Private Branch Exchange (PBX) process

Solution

The Veritas Private Branch Exchange (PBX) software is part of the Infrastructure Core Services (ICS).  This service provides single-port access to clients outside the firewall connecting to various services offered by Veritas products, such as NetBackup or the NetBackup Operations Manager (NOM).  By default, PBX messages will be logged to the /opt/VRTSpbx/log directory at a debug level of 10.

To view the current logging settings for PBX, enter the following:
# /opt/VRTSpbx/bin/pbxcfg -p
Auth User:0 : root
Secure Mode: false
Debug Level: 10
Port Number: 1556
PBX service is not cluster configured

To change the logging level for PBX, enter the following:
# /opt/VRTSpbx/bin/pbxcfg -s -l <level>
This will set the logging level for PBX.  The <level> is a number from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most verbose.
Please note that for some versions of PBX, the logging level may range from 0 to 10.

The vxlogview command can be used to view PBX and other unified logs. The product ID for ICS is 50936 and the originator ID for PBX is 103.  The following example will display all PBX logs for the last 24 hours:
# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/vxlogview -p 50936 -o 103 -t 24:00:00

There are two files that store unified logging configurations for ICS and PBX.  Though these are text files,  they should not be modified using a text editor.  The vrtslog.conf file will contain entries for the ICS product.  This will also include the path to the icsul.conf file.  The icsul.conf file contains the configurations for originators, such as PBX (103).
The default settings in the vrtslog.conf file are:
# cat /etc/vx/vrtslog.conf |grep 50936
50936.Configuration=/etc/vx/VxICS/icsul.conf
50936.Names=VxICS, ics

The default settings in the icsul.conf file are:
# cat /etc/vx/VxICS/icsul.conf |grep 103
103.DebugLevel=1
103.DiagnosticLevel=0
103.LogToOslog=true
103.LogDirectory=/opt/VRTSpbx/log/
103.L10nResourceDir=/opt/VRTSpbx/resources
103.L10nLib=/opt/VRTSicsco/lib/libvxexticu.so
103.L10nResource=VxPBX

It should be noted that the DebugLevel and DiagnosticLevel settings do not apply to PBX. All logging for PBX is done at the Application level, so using vxlogcfg to try and change the debug or diagnostic level will have no effect on PBX logging.  This behavior is different than other NetBackup originators since PBX only logs at the Application level.  As a result, the pbxcfg command must be used to set the logging level.  The vxlogcfg command can still be used to change other settings such as the LogDirectory setting.

Additional information on the Veritas Private Branch Exchange service can be found in the Veritas Infrastructure Core Services 1.2.3 Installation Guide which is located in the docs directory on either the UNIX or Windows version of the Veritas Infrastructure Core Services CD.
