Solution

Possible Solutions:

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

Please follow the steps mentioned below to take the backup of the complete registry.

1) Click on Start  >> Click on Run >> Type regedit.

2) Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Export"

3) Save the file to different location. The file created will be with .reg extension.

Solution 1:

The registry value for "Common Files" is incorrectly set.

Verify that HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CommonFilesDir is pointing to the correct Common Files directory.

Note: The drive letter listed in the CommonFilesDir should display the drive letter where Windows is currently installed. Unless an installation of another application has changed this value, the default value should be set to: C:\Program Files\Common Files.

Solution 2:
1. Click on Start > Run > and type "cliconfg" in the run window (without the quotation)

2. The following protocols  might be disabled:
Named pipes, TCP/IP, Multiprotocols, NWLink IPX/SPX
3. Select the protocols in the disabled window and enable them.
4. Click APPLY and OK.

Solution 3:
Go to Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and click on "Add New Administrator" and grant the Service Account "SysAdmin" role on SQL Instance (BKUPEXEC). (Figure 1)
Figure 1.

Solution 4:
Re-apply Windows 2003 service pack

Solution 5:
