NetBackup nbpatch_check Utility

Solution

Description
A utility to check and download the latest NetBackup patches from Symantec Support.   Provided AS IS.

The nbpatch_check agent has 2 modes.

When run on a NetBackup system in default mode, nbpatch_check will automatically discover which NetBackup version is installed. Upon selecting a version, nbpatch_check automatically determines the patch containers required to properly patch the system.  nbpatch_check then provides the option to download the patches via HTTP - or just provide TechNote references for each patch.  This mode requires a NetBackup installation.

The second mode is the standalone mode triggered via the -standalone switch.  This mode can be run where NetBackup is not installed.  Instead of automatically looking for what is installed, this mode will present a menu of choices for supported versions, patches, and options for the user to select.  Then nbpatch_check will user this input to offer options to either download patches via HTTP or just provide TechNote references for each patch.

Internet Connectivity Requirements
Internet connectivity from the machine where nbpatch_check will be executed is required.  nbpatch_check requires the ability to connect to seer.entsupport.symantec.com and download1.veritas.com using port 80 (HTTP).

After nbpatch_check downloads each patch file, please refer to http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/338448.htm for MD5 sums to ensure file integrity prior to extracting and installing each patch.

Compatibility
nbpatch_check is compatible with AIX, HP-UX (PA-RISC), Linux (x86/x64), Solaris (Sparc), and Windows (x86/x64).  To obtain patches for other supported operating system, run nbpatch_check in standalone mode from a compatible host.

Limitations
· NetBackup 5.0 and earlier are not compatible and supported.
· NetBackup 5.1 MP7 is the only patch version available for version 5.1
· NetBackup 6.0 MP7 is the only patch version available for 6.0
· NetBackup 6.5.4 and later are the only patch versions available for 6.5
· Unlisted major versions of NetBackup (except above) are not yet supported
