Jul 11, 2008 04:38 PM

This document references Barcode Solution release 6.7 if you are unfamiliar with the changes made in this current release check the out the release notes: https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=37810&p=1

Please note there is an Altiris barcode Solution 6.7 Hotfix 41762 that is recommended to be installed as well.

To install Barcode Manager on Host computer, you must access the Altiris Console from the host computer using the credentials of the barcode device user. This allows Barcode Manager to be installed on the host computer and Barcoder to be installed on the barcode device. Barcode Solution uses Barcode Manager and Barcoder to help in the collection of data. These programs must be installed before you can use Barcode Solution.

ActiveSync Notes:

Microsoft ActiveSync 3.8 or higher is a prerequisite for installing Barcoder. Barcode Solution uses Microsoft ActiveSync 3.8 (Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 was used for testing) or higher to establish a partnership with the barcode device. Microsoft ActiveSync is used to read and write asset data to the barcode device. However, it is not used to send data to Notification Server. Barcode Manager performs that task.

Cradle and Device Notes:

Before beginning this procedure, make sure the synchronization cradle is connected to the computer on which you are going to install Barcode Manager. If the cradle is not connected, perform the necessary steps to connect it properly. The barcode device must also be charged and in the cradle before starting.

Privileges and Permissions Notes:

Select the Configuration Tab (This tab is not needed for Barcode User). Then select Configuration> Server Settings> Notification Server Settings> Security Roles> Barcode User> Privileges Tab (in the right pane), the following are the privileges and Permissions that are set by default:

  • Altiris Console Privileges ~ View Tasks Tab
  • Item Tasks ~ Add to Barcode Export List

Select the Task Tab. Then select Tasks> Barcode> you should see the following folders and Tasks:
Barcode> Manage Changes> Conflict Management (Barcode User)
Barcode> Manage Changes> Upload Verification (Barcode User)
Barcode> Scanning>Assign Barcode (Barcode User)
Barcode> Scanning>Quick Scan (Barcode User)
Barcode> Scanning>Receiving (Barcode User)
Barcode> Scanning>Search (Barcode User)
Barcode>Manage Handheld Device (Barcode User)

Install Symantec Altiris Barcode Manager and Symantec Altiris Barcoder Notes:

Go to Altiris Console on the host computer and then select on the Tasks Tab.
Then select Tasks> Barcode> Manage Handheld Device.

  1. In the right pane, select the synchronization profile of the user of the barcode device.
  2. Select any Additional Resource you want to send to the barcode device.
  3. Click the icon "Install Handheld Application / Initiate Handheld Synchronization" once. At this point, Altiris Barcode Manager will be installed on the host computer.
    1. Once the Symantec Altiris Barcode Manager Setup comes up; select Next, Next, for the Installation Type, choose Complete then select Next, Next, and Finish.
  4. Click the icon "Install Handheld Application / Initiate Handheld Synchronization" again. At this point, Symantec Altiris Barcoder will be installed on the host computer.
    1. Once the Symantec Altiris Barcoder Installation Wizard comes up; select Next, Next, OK (It will Install needed Applications on the Device), Ok, after the downloading is complete an Application Downloading Complete will display and ask you to check the mobile device for additional install steps on the device (DO NOT select OK until the steps are done). Note: (If you get a message saying the applications can not be installed to your next sync and you hit Sync and the apps still do not load, try doing a "soft reset" to the device once the device resets it should start the application install process then hit okay on the Host computer).
    2. On the Handheld device install the following applications to the Device:
      • Microsoft .NET CF 2.0
      • Microsoft SQL Mobile 2005 [EN]
      • Socket SocketScan Software (You will get a message "SocketScanCD successfully installed, do a soft reset". DO NOT reset the device until all applications are installed).
      • Symantec Altiris Barcoder 6.7.
      • Symbol Managed Class Libraries
      • At this point remove the device from the cradle and hit Ok it will reset the device.
      • Once the device has reset, recradle it and Select OK on the Host machine.
  5. Click the icon "Install Handheld Application / Initiate Handheld Synchronization" again this will start the Data Synchronize, and prompt you to enter your credentials on the device. See the "Data Synchronize Note" for correct syntax.

Data Synchronize Note:

To download assets to the scanner make sure the barcode device has a good connection to the host computer.

  1. On the barcode device, select Start > Programs > Symantec Altiris Barcoder.

See knowledgebase article 41762 for details.
It address Active Sync requirement when installing the Barcode Manager and licensing when using the console pages.
