Configuring IIS7.x and IIS6.x for HTTP Imaging Support

In Deployment Solution 7.1 SP1 you can use IIS Web Server to store Images. HTTP Imaging supports capture/deploy/restore of Ghost and RapiDeploy images. Following are steps to configure IIS7.x and IIS6.x for HTTP Imaging support.

Steps to configure IIS7 on Windows 2008 R2

  • Go to “Server Manager”
  • Select “Roles”
  • Click “Add Roles”
  • Read the instruction, click Next
  • Select “Web Server (IIS)” role and click Next
  • Select following options

            WebDAV publishing

            Basic Authentication

            Windows Authentication

            Digest Authentication

  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Installation succeeded, Click on Close
  • Click on “Web Server (IIS)”
  • Click on “IIS Manager”
  • In Connection Pane, Click on <Machine_name>, Click on “Sites”
  • Remove the “Default Web Site” - This step is optional
  • Add New Web Site - If you are configuring Default Web Site ignore this step and proceed with below steps
  • In Add Site Dialog, configure Site Name, Physical Path.
  • Select above created web site.
  • Double click on “Directory Browsing” and Enable it
  • Double click on “MIME TYPE” and add following MIME TYPE

            File Name Extension: gho, MIME Type: application/octet-stream

            File Name Extension: ghs, MIME Type: application/octet-stream

  • Double click on “WebDAV Authoring Rules” and Enable WebDAV
  • Click on “Adding Authoring Rule..”
  • Select “All Content”, “All Users”, in Permission select “Read”, “Source”, “Write”
  • Double Click on “Authentication” and Enable one of the following Authentication of your choice

            Basic Authentication         

            Digest Authentication

Imaging Support

  • Ghost supports IIS7.x
  • Anonymous Authentication is not supported by Ghost on IIS7.x
  • Rdeploy is not supported on IIS7.x

Steps to Configure IIS6 on Windows 2003 Server

  • Go to Control Panel
  • Select Add or Remove Programs
  • Click on Add/Remove Windows Components
  • Enable “Application Server” checkbox
  • Click on Details, Internet Information Services (IIS) should be checked
  • Click on Next
  • After successful installation click on Finish
  • Launch IIS Manager
  • In connection pane, click on <Machine name>, click on “Web Sites”
  • Remove Default Website – This Step is Optional
  • Add new Web Site – If you are configuring Default Web Site ignore this step and proceed with below steps
  • Right Click on Web Site, select Properties
  • In Web Site Tab, Enter Description, TCP Port, Enable HTTP Keep Alive, Enable Logging
  • In Home Directory Tab, Select option “A directory located on this computer”
  • Configure local Path, Enable Read, Write, Directory Browsing permission
  • In Directory Security Tab, Click on Edit button under “Authentication and access Control”, Select  one of the available authentication of your choice: “Anonymous”, “Basic”, “Digest”
  • In HTTP Header tab, Click on MIME Types…Add following MIME Types for Ghost and RapiDeploy

       Extension: GHO, MIME type: Application/Octet-stream

       Extension: GHS, MIME type: Application/Octet-stream

       Extension: Img, MIME type: Application/Octet-stream

       Extension: 001, MIME type: Application/Octet-stream

       Extension: 002, MIME type: Application/Octet-stream and so on

  • In Connection, click on “Web Service Extension”, Select “WebDAV” and click on Allow

Imaging Tool Support:

Both Ghost and Rdeploy supports IIS 6.x

This is a great article.  We have just discovered though that in DS 7.5, if you do this on one of your package servers with the DSPS components, it doubles-up what we do, and breaks it.  Translation, don't do it on your 7.5 site servers.  It may still be applicable in 7.5 for NON site-servers to which you intend on capturing an image, just not on one of ours.
