Failed to Redirect Symantec Agent 7.1 to Another Server: Error: Invalid Network Protocol (-2147217408)]]

Jul 06, 2012 02:50 PM

Problem:

Computer has Symantec Management Agent installed correctly and is configured to use a notification server. You want to point the agent to a new server and would like to do that using the aexagentutil command.

Steps:

1) Log on to the client pc.

2) Open a DOS command prompt.

3) Change the prompt to C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent.

4) Type "AexAgentUtil.exe /server:<new server name> web:<new server name>"

5) Command prompt returns back without any error message.

6) Right Click on the Symantec Management Agent Icon in the task bar and select 'Symantec Management Agent Settings'.

7) Click on the button 'Update' under Configuration. Also click on button 'Send' under Basic Inventory.

8) The name showing across 'Altiris Server:' should bring up the new server name provided in the command above in a few seconds. But it won't.

Cause:

The logs under C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Agent will show the following error message as part of switching the server via command prompt.

<event date='Jul 05 09:26:18' severity='2' hostName='<Computer Name>' source='ConfigServer' module='AeXNSAgent.exe' process='AeXNSAgent.exe' pid='1740' thread='3096' tickCount='1448375' >

<![CDATA[Ignoring request to change server: server=<New server name> web=<New server name>: Invalid network protocol (-2147217408)]]>

Check the web address for the Altiris Console. If it is using https instead of http, you will see the above error.

Solution:

If you don't specify the https address in the command, it will send the information using http and it fails to reach the server.

Try the following command in a DOS prompt after changing the prompt to C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent:

AexAgentUtil.exe /server:<new server name> web:https://<new server name>/Altiris

Note: please give the fully qualified domain name of the server name in the above command.

Invoke the Symantec Management Agent Icon and you should be able to see the new server name there.
