Importing Computers via .csv File Generates Errors in Deployment Server 6.9

Mar 18, 2009 05:41 PM

The use of importing  mass numbers of computers in Deployment Solution can be an incredible time saver for any Altiris Administration team. Altiris has provided, since the 5.5 days, a sample spreadsheet "ImportComputers55.xls" in the Deployment Server\Samples directory to use as a framework when importing computers. Simply enter your relevant data, save as a .csv and import the new computers to DS.

A few known issues have cropped up over the years, and the two available workarounds are provided in the following kb articles:

Altiris KB Article 23637

Altiris KB Article 35437

With the recent updates of 6.9, 6.9SP1, and 6.9SP1 MR1, some people have experienced new issues with this method, that the two previous articles didn't resolve.

.An excellent solution was posted to the legacy Altiris forums, by customer williama (who deserves all the credit).

By adding a blank column in column 4, labeled 'added', the mass import resolves without issue (provided the inputed data is correct).

Please read the post for more details.

Sadly none of these methods worked for me, so I decided to dissect the only thing that worked for me: the ImportComputers55.txt sample file. After concluding it contains 102 commas, I created an excel template in which you can paste your computer information.

All you have to do is paste the computernames  into columns A and E, and the serial numbers into column C. All the information is then concatenated into column G, which you just have to copy and paste into a text file. This text file can then be imported into Altiris as normal. It looks like this:

test1
,, testsn1 ,,, test1 ,1 ,DOMAIN , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,  test1,,testsn1,,,test1,1 ,DOMAIN , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I understand this might look like the long way round, however as stated before this is the only method that works for me and I thought it might help other people out who are experiencing the same issues.

Johan

Thanks Nelo,
I'll do just that and add a sample .xml as an attachment.

Cheers,

Jim

Edit:
Sample .xml attached. The file will have to renamed, as the forums don't allow .xml attachments.

Yeah, there isnt a sample file for the xml.  So create a pre-defined computer add some values and export  the client. It might be better if u create 2 pre-defined computers to see the xml pattern.

Looking in the samples directory, however I don't see a .xml for new computers, which is the situation I'm describing.

If they are all new computers, there is nothing to export (obviously).

There is a new way to import computers. See if this works for you.

Import and Export computers has been added to DS 6.9 or greater. The exported file is xml format so this is much easier than importing machines using the csv.  Give it a world.

I was using MS Office 2007, so the 16 row limit was not an issue.

Note: I added the attachment for the new spreadsheet, since I missed it the first go-around. (still learning the new site)
