Manage Mobile Devices Report

Jun 11, 2012 01:17 PM

This article describes a method to provide additional information when managing iOS devices through MMS. The default organisational view (which can't be edited) provides very little information on a device and can be confusing when trying to identify one device from another, our support staff wanted a more efficient way to identify a device and manage it in one place.

The below steps will create a report with enough information for support staff to uniquely identify a device and then utilise the right-click menu to manage. You can also incorporate this report into a workflow or other method to manage and identify devices.

Creating the Report (Report is attached):

1) Create a new report and set the base query to Mobile.

2) Click on the Fields tab and add Mobile_Device_iOS.UserId

3) Go to the Query tab, click on Mobile_Device_iOS and create a join.

4) Select Inv_Global_Windows_Users in the top field, then Mobile_Device_iOS.UserID and UserId into the two fields below.

5) Click on Inv_Global_Windows_Users in the left hand panel and create another join.

6) Select Inv_Global_User_General_Details in the top field, then Inv_Global_Windows_Users._ResourceGuid and _ResourceGuid into the two fields below.

7) Click on the Fields tab and add "Inv_Global_User_General_Details.Display Name", "Mobile_Phone_iOS.PhoneNumber", and "Mobile_Identification.OEMInfo". Add any additional fields you find useful.

8) Edit the Aliases of the Fields as you see fit. The attached report has some examples of this.

9) Save the report as "Manage iOS Devices".

You can then add this report to a menu item for your support staff to find.

Creating the Menu Item:

1) Click on Settings, Console, Menus.

2) Expand Manage, then click on Mobile.

3) Create a new item called "Manage Mobile Devices" and set Show to Single Page View.

4) Click on the "Report page" radio button and browse to the report we just created.

5) Click apply.

None of the right-click functions in my custom reports ever work without rebuilding the "ShowContextMenu" drilldown in the report. So if you're getting an error when right-clicking a device, please apply the below steps.

1) Edit the "Manage iOS Devices" report

2) Click on the Drilldowns Tab

3) Remove the "ShowContextMenu" Drilldown.

4) Click Add and enter "ShowContextMenu" for the name.

5) Select "Right-Click" for the Event.

6) Select "Show Context Menu" for Performs.

7) Drop down Action Configuration and select GUID.

8) Check the "Display additional resource tool items in the menu" button.
