Deployment Server Integrations: IBM ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit

Apr 13, 2009 05:46 PM

Deployment Server Integrations:

  • Integrating the IBM ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit into Deployment Solution 6.9
  • Integrating the HP Rapid Deployment Pack for servers into Deployment Solution 6.9
  • Dell Integration into Deployment Solution 6.9

Previously we have discussed how to install Deployment Solution 6.9 with three different methods:

  1. Simple Installation Method
  2. Custom Installation Method
  3. Component Installation Method

And if you cannot remember, here is a quick recap or short summary of the three methods:

Simple Installation Method

Simple Install is a procedure that places all Deployment Server components on the same computer such as Deployment Server, Deployment Console, Deployment Share and Deployment database.

Custom Installation Method

Custom Install allows you to distribute all Deployment Server components on different computers.

Component Installation Method

Components Install allows you to add selected Deployment Server components to the existing Deployment Share. You also can add Sysprep files.

It does not matter which of the above methods you used during the installation of Altiris Deployment Solution, one that hopefully best supports your infrastructure and environment. As long as the Deployment Solution server is up and running you will be able to integrate the IBM, HP and Dell Utilities for use in the Automatic provisioning, configuring and deployment of Windows, Linux and Unix servers into your environment either one by one or in large numbers.

We will start of with the IBM ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit

The ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit is a collection of system configuration tools and installation scripts that you can use to deploy operating systems to BladeCenter or System x servers in a repeatable and predictable manner.

From a Deployment user console, you can provision IBM BladeCenter and System x Servers from bare metal by scripting or imaging Windows or Linux operating systems, patch on both a hardware and software level, remotely deploy software such as IBM's Director Agent, "rip and replace" Blade servers, or schedule pre-configured jobs for each phase of server management.

The following tasks can be performed using the ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit:

  • System BIOS Updates
  • RAID configuration and disk Partition
  • Update Device drivers
  • Create one large job that contains several small jobs/tasks
  • Just to name a few uses.

How do we install the IBM ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit?

Firstly you would have to get your hands on the ServerGuide Scripting toolkit software, where you might as? Well you can download the files directly from IBM website by following the Following link: http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/xseries/systems_management/sgstk.html

After the toolkit has been downloaded, run the EXE file and follow the prompts. You will be greeted with a nice welcome screen which we are so use to by now. Please accept all the license agreements and then you will be presented with the following screen:
