I have an urging desire on behalf of the small IT service companies serving to SMBs. e.g. We are one of them. I have come across many scenarios in the organization having about 20 to 50 PCs. Such SMB does not have dedicated IT person to take care of the needs. Such strata of service providers, like us, in the business of providing services to the SMBs are not very expert, and they lack the proper understanding of the products. e.g. Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Backup Exec. And the way the product functions. In this scenario of not having confidence in the product installation, even if there is a genuine need to provide a server/console backed product like SEP, we and our sales team would sell desktop antivirus to these SMB clients e.g. NAV 2009 instead of SEP 11.x. Or instead of Backup Exec, we take manual backup of each desktop with and external hard drive, taking backup of only My Documents and Some other settings. Now a days, a typical SEP or Backup Exec or Windows 2003 Server and windows 2008 servers, get installed very easily, but the challenge is in configuring these setups. Symantec has provided excellent help on installation, e.g...... http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2008070715030248 Some of the Connect user and administrators have worked very hard to post some good articles as well, e.g..... https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/top-25-articles-sep-start-here-posting-your-sep-questions-forum However, preparing computers that run Windows Vista for remote client deployment http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007091021513648 was learned very late, after some hiccups. Our first setup was detecting virus, but was not removing virus.... we arelised very late that the ideal settings should be Clean --> Delete in verious Antivirus, Auto Protect, Action Section. One of our friends made us some changes in the Firewall rules. We are still not very sure, whether these changes were correct or not. Or whatever First time changes he made us to do, are correct or not. We could not find detailed explanation of firewall rules yet. However, we found it's hard to find step-by-step configuration setting for products like SEP and Backup Exec. e.g. we could not find that after the first installation, the live update would take about 2 hours on getting update on a 256mbps internet connection, and we keep on thinking that Live update is not working. We did not know that Group Inheritance should be turned off. Surprisingly, we could not find the procedure to "How to get help from Symantec Technical Support", how to get 12 digit support ID. You may ask, why do we need that? Symantec does provide formal classroom training. The training on SEP from Symantec costs around $1000. This is EXORBITANT. In last eight weeks of desire to lean, we have some comfort on SEP installation. This was achieved by self learning thro Symantec Connect, SEP documentation on CDs, Symantec Website and other reference sources. After two months of trail and errors and couple of failures, we have realized that "oh my god, the job was not that hard to achieve" if some basic "Get up and Running" tips were provided for the first setup to start and running. This would not have taken more than 2 days to make ourselves comfortable. Well, as of now, we have gain confidence of setting up about 50 to 100 PCs network with SEP so far. And we are thinking of writing up and article on SEP, so that it can be useful for lot of people like us. In the meantime, our next step is to gain confidence on Backup. And we seek similar help from someone who shows willingness to do it. Otherwise, may be after 3 months, you shall see, we shall be thinking of writing the similar article for Backup Exec. :) Tejas
