When deploying the Symantec Management Agents, I noticed several computers failing to install the Software Update Plug-in Install for Windows x64.
Looking in the Software Delivery tab of the Symantec Management Agent, the plug-in showed a run failed status with a yellow warning icon. I double-clicked on the package in the lower pane and then checked the Run History. The error repeated for the number of time it tried on its own.
On the Download History tab, I follow the link to the package from the Package Server and tried running the installer. Running the installer from the server or copied locally will get an error:
Error code 1638 - Another version of product was installed. Please use Microsoft MSI CleanUp Util (msicuu2) to remove previous version of Patch Management Plug-In. When old Patch Plug-In will removed try to install Patch Plug-In again.
I tried to uninstall the agent altogether and reinstalled the agent. When the agent came to the point of installing the affected plug-in, the same problem surfaced.
Problem
The plug-in installer is "seeing" components from a partial or previously installed plug-in and cannot continue without corrective actions. As a result, no further plug-ins can install in the agent.
The second part of the problem is trying to find the msicuu2 that is noted in the error message. It is difficult to find a direct link to the now unsupported tool.
Corrective Actions
When presented with the symptoms noted above, follow the steps below.
From this point, you can either wait for the Symantec Management Agent to rerun the installation of the Software Update plug-in, or you can initiate the installation yourself. You do not need to waste your time in uninstalling the Symantec Management Agent as a part of the troubleshooting steps.
