What to do, what not for SEP in Win 7

Jun 25, 2009 11:13 PM

While Window 7 still in Beta testing, SEP can be deployed after a quick check on few things

1. Update your copy of Windows with all the latest RC updates
2. Bring down the UAC to Never Notify for good installation experience
3. Grab a copy of SEP 11 MR4MP2 from fileconnect.symantec.com
4. Run the setup elevated as Administrator to avoid unneccesary permission issues
5. Never install NTP, the tiffer driver creates a mess with the network adapter or i should say, Windows 7 just don't allow a teefer driver to be installed without a battle to get it installed!
6. Don't make a mistake of letting Windows to check for driver updates for teefer, it screws it badly.
7. As far as possible try avoiding TruScan, it shoots up the CPU usuage randomly and causes the system to freeze. I assume this could be because I am running on a Beta OS.
8. Update you ant-virus regularly, preferable once in every 12 hours
9. Never try to play around with any services unless requried. I am facing very frequent system crashes.
10. Turn on the UAC back, since we have the SEP installed
11. As far as possible avoid Virtual Environment, I underwent a lot of Unexpected Errors and blue screens issues
12. Get ready to re-install the OS anytime!! Anything can happen in Beta, and Microsoft have a good excuse - it's Beta.
13. Don't regret to uninstall Windows 7 on 1st March 2010.
