ITMS 7.1 Beta - Now Available

ITMS 7.1 is the latest and most advanced version of the Altiris IT management software. The following are the key suite-level features planned for this release:

·         Enhanced UI for improved usability and performance – navigation in the new UI for managing Computers and Software is specifically designed to help administrators quickly find the data and management options they need. The look-and-feel and responsiveness of the new UI is intended to greatly improve user productivity and satisfaction.

·         Inclusion of full Symantec Workflow  – Workflow is the means to tie together Symantec and other environments, to connect people, process and information, and to automate and enforce procedures. All Workflow components and capabilities are available through ITMS and associated management suites.

·         Inclusion of IT Analytics data analysis capability – IT Analytics incorporates multi-dimensional analysis and robust graphical reporting and distribution features. This enables users to explore data without advanced knowledge of databases or third-party reporting tools. Both IT Analytics and the packs for Client Management Suite, Server Management Suite, and Asset Management Suite are included with their corresponding suites.

·         Support for installing on a 64-bit server – all Client Management Suite, Server Management Suite, and Asset Management Suite solutions and components are supported on 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2.

·         Simplified software license management – software-based usage tracking is provided through the new Silverlight-based UI for intuitive license management.

Additionally, important enhancements are provided in various individual functional areas. The following are some examples:

·         Deployment Solution – support for extended driver types in Deploy Anywhere (HII); RDeploy-style multicast and imaging over HTTP in the Ghost engine; Solaris imaging.

·         Inventory – application metering performance and scalability improvements.

·         Monitor/Server Health – Windows and Linux s server health monitor policy.

·         OOBM – Integration of new Intel SCS 56.4 for complete SQL 2008 support.

·         Patch Management – Linux endpoints no longer require Internet access to verify entitlement status.

·         pcA Solution – policy pages have targets and schedules as hierarchy editable properties.

·         PC Transplant – support for 64-bit MS Office 2010.

·         Real-time System Manager – 1-to-1 and 1-to-many out-of-band BIOS management; scalability validation for large number of clients powered on.

·         Software Management – new UI for dynamic creation of software products, new software product based display, and software-based usage tracking; separate scheduling for program execution and download in Managed Delivery Policies; hierarchy editable properties (HEP) support.

·         VM Management – simplification of credentials setup and use; integration of DS Jobs in Create VM Wizard.

I was having the issue too where I could not add the Package Service.  Sure enough, that article says verify ASP.Net and when I checked the service was stopped and set for manual.  You saved me a lot of time, thanks kind sir!

A file not found error has occurred while trying to download or copy.

http://www.solutionsam.com/solutions/7/qa/7_1/tp8/x64/updates/altiris_unixagent_7_1_kb53309_x64.msi...

This started last week for me.  Have contacted support but have not had any response.  This has already set us back on our project plan as we begin planning for a version 6 to 7.1 upgrade.

2/4/2011

Just received an email from Susan Keller regarding Following files have failed to validate:

"I had someone fix the files in the solutionsam\solutions\7\qa\7_1
Tp8\x64 directory the other day.

-Susan"

My download has gotten past the altiris_unixagent_7_1_kb53309_x64.msi so it looks as if we are back in business.

Hi, DanCatBYU:

I had a similar situtation when adding the role of Package Server to a server.

Have a look at this link:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH46601

At the end (at least in my case), the problem came because we had a few folders missing, and some files had 0 bytes in size.

Good luck:

Anybody have any clue on this. I am still unresolved on this issue.

Site Management | Site Services | Package Management | Adding a Package Service to a Site Server produces the error:

“One or more of the selected servers has IIS7 installed. Additional configuration steps are required for IIS7. Please refer to the SMP documentation for more details.”

The Site Servers with Package Service installed shows “Install Pending” indefinitely.

The Site Server did pass prereq checks for IIS and asp.net and installed ITMS successfully.

Feb 02, 2011 12:24 PM

These appear to work with the 7.1 beta

Feb 02, 2011 11:37 AM

I was trying to do a clean install so I could show my management what things were in store for the new version and couldn't download the files any more. This has pushed the project out because management didn't get to see what they wanted to and now I have to wait till the first part of March for the release date which no doubt will be pushed.

Like posted above we know this is beta but I was working on documentation and setting up filters, task and other things that could be copied over to the official version. It would be nice to continue doing this until the release.

Hi,

How can we test a product not available anymore...

We agree that you have to work on it and pass some polish on the code but come on... 3 months without anything between the beta cut and the final release.

We exactly know what is a beta version and we accept the bugs and the consequences.

Is it not enough to let it released?

Cheers.

Feb 02, 2011 04:28 AM

We are getting the same errors with the installation of IT management suite.

Seems that that the needed files are removed from the server.
Symantec, please put them back in place, thanks!

Feb 01, 2011 12:20 PM

I need new licenses as well.

Feb 01, 2011 11:54 AM

I need as well new Beta Licenses for ITMS 7.1.

Kind regards

Peter

Feb 01, 2011 10:51 AM

Hi,

I would need (like a lot others) new Beta Licenses which will work until ITMS 7.1 finally is released.

Please help asap!

Kind regards

Robert

Jan 31, 2011 05:50 PM

OK. I have the error now. Looks like it's with the same file, the _unixagent_

Jan 31, 2011 05:41 PM

I saw these a few times as well last Thursday and Friday, I thought maybe it was my network, so I rebuilt my infrastructure (VM's) and moved my VM's to a blade with better connectivity. I did 2 installs today and have yet to see the error.

Jan 31, 2011 12:30 PM

I would also like an update on this please. This is preventing my Servicedesk testing. The management console installed ok though.

"the following files have failed to validate"

Any word on a fix?

Jan 26, 2011 04:23 PM

Now I'm getting these errors. I just can't win.

Jan 25, 2011 06:17 PM

Tried it and no sucess.  I'm about ready to through it out the window.

Jan 21, 2011 06:42 AM

I ran into this issue where the readiness check would say that IIS6 Compatibility mode needed to be enabled when it already was. By right-clicking on the SIM icon and selecting Run as Administrator we were able to get the installer to recognize that IIS6 Compatibility was indeed enabled and proceed with the installation.

Jan 20, 2011 07:58 PM

I'm also having this problem and it is getting really frustrating.

Jan 14, 2011 01:19 PM

i'd venture a guess and say it's the same things you had to do to the ns (smp) server to meet install prereq's.  the asp.net and iis6 compatibility items found in the role admin.  i didn't encounter this as our site servers are all 2003 boxes.

Jan 14, 2011 12:44 PM

I got this prompt when installed OOB Site Service.   Went ahead with the installation - appears to have worked.

Haven't tried the package site server install yet...

Jan 14, 2011 12:36 PM

During the install of a package service on a site server I get the warning

Important: One or more of the selected servers has IIS7 installed. Additional configuration steps are required for IIS7. Please refer to the SMP documentation for more details.

What are the additional steps? Anyone have a link to this SMP Doc? In which part of the doc set do I need to look?

Will ITMS 7.1 support Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2

Jan 13, 2011 02:21 PM

Will ITMS 7.1 support Site Servers running Windows Server 2008 R2?

Jan 13, 2011 01:23 AM

if you have real licenses for 7.x products, use those instead so you don't have to worry about them expiring.

Jan 13, 2011 12:51 AM

Will these be renewed again to take us up to the 1st March or at least the release of the full product?

The current ones seem to expire 1st Feb....

Dec 27, 2010 12:54 PM

Running the SIM does not find an update for PM. Has 7.1.62 for PM been released yet?

Dec 18, 2010 05:51 AM

Could you check what version of Activity Center you have installed?
The version can be found in Symantec Console: Home / Notification Server Management / Portal / Installed Products.

The issue with constantly refreshing Patch policies should be fixed in the version 7.1.62.

Dec 17, 2010 02:59 PM

I now have the problem with Adobe, Novell and Red Hat policies as well!

Help!

Dec 17, 2010 02:54 PM

I only see the problem with Software Update Policies for Microsoft(of course). Very anoying. Anyone know how to correct the problem? Until that is resolved I cannot test PM.

Dec 14, 2010 06:22 PM

5.4 (not 56.4 wink)

64-bit and Windows 2008 support

SCS 5.4 will configure all currently available version of Intel AMT (2-6).   Technically it will also configure the upcoming Intel AMT 7.0... but waiting until product announcements to explain more on that one.

Dec 13, 2010 07:32 PM

This is consistent with 7.0 as well. I see it only when I am logged directly on the server. Seems like a silverlight issue to me but I'm no developer. I am pretty sure I have tried IE 7 and 8 with the same results.
It is really annoying too.......but not quite as annoying as Altiris support on hold music ;)

Dec 13, 2010 05:12 PM

Skeller, I've been trying to create a PM Policy, but everytime I try to create or edit the PM Policy, the right hand console screen constantly refreshes every 2 seconds. Any ideas why? Iv'e tried this on 2 other computers with the same results all have silverlight ver 3 to 4.

Dec 08, 2010 03:27 PM

Ziggy, I'm still trying to get the VMM licenses. Sorry about the delay.

Dec 02, 2010 12:06 PM

I did not see any additional licenses in the new zip for 'Virtual Machine Managment'.  Please add some.

Dec 01, 2010 05:28 PM

Updated Beta licenses have been posted as ITMS_7_1_Beta_Licenses_Update.zip

Nov 29, 2010 02:59 AM

Hi,

i checked the log files, but i do not know how to solve those errors mentioned there.

Also tried to create DB manually on the off-box server before the installation procedure, but i got the same error and the DB remains untouched.

Can someone please check the log files for me and let me know what should i do to complete the installation of this beta?

Nov 23, 2010 01:33 PM

SIM Requirement Check asks for IIS 6 comp mode to be enabled.

What exactly is checked and what else besides adding IIS 6 components in the role manager needs to be done to pass the check?

Nov 13, 2010 11:00 PM

I've just added a new license file pack for ITAnalytics as

8489145ITAnalyticsAssetManagementPack(evaluation license).zip

These are the files included:

8489148ITAnalyticsServiceManagementPack(evaluation license).txt
8489147ITAnalyticsClientManagementPack(evaluation license).txt
8489145ITAnalyticsAssetManagementPack(evaluation license).txt

Nov 09, 2010 03:20 PM

Great to see this software finally updated.  Sure is a shame that you still cannot use it on a Windows 2008 (non R2) 64-bit server. frown

Oct 29, 2010 01:18 PM

Where I work at we are in the the same boat. We're merging two AD forests which will end up tripling the amount of users and computers that we are currently managing with Altiris 6.x. We probably won't go wide spread migrating the masses until Feb/Mar, but we need to test and pilot our systems before we start the rollout and we can't wait until March for this.
I intend on rolling out 7.0 to the systems that are currently being managed by the 6.x server(s), and then build all the future NS servers as 7.1 when we look at rolling out the management to the rest of all the assets. Hopefully by then we can get the other half of the IT staff comfortable with Altiris, since currently the more accustomed to using just RDP and Windows Group Policy.

Oct 29, 2010 12:11 PM

thank you for your clarity.  i feel like a dummy now, since very little is actually on the altiris server - it's all in sql.

the reason i phrased it the way i did is because we don't have a 7.x environment yet - we're still on 6.x, and planning to implement 7 very soon.  thing is, our time table doesn't line up with symantec's release time table, so we will have to start out with ITMS 7.0 and then within less than a year, update to 7.1.

I just don't want to have to do everything twice!  I'd love to just install 7.1 and be done with it, but since we intend to start rolling out Windows 7 in June, and symantec's expected release date for 7.1 is march... well, you can see where this is going.  Considering the issues we're having simply INSTALLING 7.1 beta, we certainly can't just jump the gun and begin using it in production (nevermind the whole EULA... heh)

at least the current release of ITMS has DS 7.1 which has PXE.  that was a big hangup for a lot of companies.

Oct 29, 2010 08:59 AM

The way Symantec are talking about it right now is to build a new server but use the existing DB so in effect you are performing an upgrade on the DB.

Oct 26, 2010 03:59 PM

so... since 7.0 cannot be installed on server 2008r2 and 7.1 requires 2008r2... this sounds like there's no possible way to upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1.

am i correct in this statement, or is it possible to install 7.0 in a 64bit server OS so that it's actually possible to "just" upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1?

Oct 22, 2010 12:44 PM

VMM License has been posted in the ITMS_7_1_Beta_Licenses_VMM.zip file attached to this blog entry. (see the original post).

The license file only has the VMM license file.

From the PCAnywhere Windows Settings

under Authentication type: NT

you need to enable

"Support the global NT users and the groups that are defined in local NT groups."

I can now authenticate with our AD credentials.

Oct 21, 2010 01:41 PM

Is the AD connector requiered for PCAnywhere AD authentication? I cannot authenticate to my client with ad credentials. I'ved added my domain account as a superuser to the PCA Windows Settings.

Oct 20, 2010 06:01 AM

At first you should create a user account in the format 'DIGIT' or 'BASIC', which in turn must be associated with the External > Windows account in the format "Domain \ UserAccount"(see attached example). Thus you can not just create an account in the format "Domain \ UserAccount". Respectively, after creating an account you can add it to one of the security roles.

 screenshot1

Oct 20, 2010 04:27 AM

Ended up reinstalling SQl and using the App identity to create a blank db. I then selected "use Existing" and pointed to this blank DB in the installation routine and voila...I think the SIM should be clever enough to figure out there's no DB and stop there though....

Oct 20, 2010 12:28 AM

Alon,
What is the ip of the client connecting to pxe?
169.254. Addresses can be a pill.

Oct 19, 2010 11:45 PM

Probably you meant to type 'domain\username', the back slash is the valid charactor.

Oct 19, 2010 08:52 PM

There is a new AD Import rule has been created to help import all these domain groups:

It's called the  'Role and Account' import rule and it is used to import domain groups.

When importing a domain group using the 'Role and Account' rule, a SMP Role gets created for the domain group; If the domain group contains sub domain groups, SMP roles will be created respectively for the sub groups, as nested roles to the main domain group; If the domain group contains domain users, SMP Accountswill be created respectively for the domain users, and be members of the SMP role created for the domain group.

Oct 19, 2010 06:17 PM

adude:

These sections were updated in the User Guide

What's new in Monitor Solution 7.1
What's new in Monitor Pack for Servers 7.1

I hope that helps.

You can find SIM installation logs in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\local\temp\1(might be a different number, but usually 1)\SIM Logs\, they might shed more light on the problem you experiencing.
Make sure to turn 'Show hidden files, folder and drives' on and 'Hide protected OS files' off.

    Oct 19, 2010 07:14 AM

I have been trying to add users, under Accounts, but it won't let me.  It says something about the username not being able to contain certain characters.  I was typing domain/username.  Did you do anything other than that to get it working?

    Oct 19, 2010 06:20 AM

    Hello,

i have probably similar issue. all the step before the installation itself are passed without any error, just after the download and installation i got the "Error During Installation" screen saying "Configuration of one or more products failed; see the log for details. To attempt configuration again, reinstall the product."

Tried several times to reinstall the server where A7.1beta is being installed without any change, still the same error.

Server is VMware ESXi Virtual machine with 2CPUs and 4GB of memory.

SQL server 2008 SP1 installed off-box, already running other solutions.

Both servers are in the same domain, using same domain account as administrator (SQL has been installed with this account, so it is SQL admin with full access rights)

During the setup of A7.1beta the name of database has been changed to CMDB_A71beta. "Use Windows Authentication" has been selected. Connection verification passed successfully. After installation process there is no database called CMDB_A71beta on the off-box SQL server.

Only the "Altiris IT Management Suite" is selected on the "Install New Products" screen with "Product Type" and "Suites" Filters

The only log file I found is stored in C:\Program Files\Altiris\Symantec Installation Manager\InstallHistory\PerfLogs and there is no error mentioned:

    Ricodjs,

Can you provide any additional information such as where SQL Server is installed(i.e., on-box or off-box), which products were being installed, screenshots of any errors, etc? Are you able to get past the Database Configuration screen of the installation wizard? Thanks.

    Oct 18, 2010 04:48 AM

Can anyone post some screen caps of the new UI?  Mainly looking at areas that have changed from 7.0

(license management silverlight UI, deployment solution extended drivers support, etc)

    Thanks!

    Oct 18, 2010 04:38 AM

I have a similar setup, the only step I did additionally during the database config , was create a login for the service account in SQL giving it additional rights (as well as making it a local admin) but that could just be how I installed the system.  This went onto create the Symantec_CMDB database automatically.

Sounds like your config should be working already with everything you have done.

    Oct 15, 2010 08:13 AM

    Installing the 7.1 Beta on a Win2008R2 box with SQL2008 Sp1 (NOT R2).

The SIM/installation process isn't creating the Symantec_CMDB database which isn't helping the end user experience much :)

I've checked User rights for the service account and logged on account, they're fine (I can log on as both of them and create a db manually)

They are both Admins on the box itself. There's plenty of disk space.

The installation windows can see the db and bring back a list of dbs in the "Create new/use existing" section.

Windows Firewall is turned off, all pre-reqs are met.

I'm a bit stumped tbh - any ideas?

    Thanks

Not quite sure where to submit "issues" that we come up.  In any case here is my list so far from 1 day of testing:

    - can't type a "0" for purchase cost of software.  This is in the silverlight screen called "Add license purchase".

    - once I click on "manage this software", save the change, the same option shows up again when I click on the "Software Releasese" section.
I would expect it to know that I am already managing the software
    - when I right click on a managed software from the "software release" section I have the full menu.  When I go to the "Managed Software"
section and right click on the same software resouce I only have 2 options, quick and managed delivery.  I would expect the full menu show up
on the found link.  After that the link showed up.
    - when adding a new driver under the "driver database management" screen, it tells me that the driver already exists, then I click on ok indefinitely without the window closing
After clicking cancel I see that indeed my new driver has been imported to what seems successfully.
    - when booting a machine to PXE I get a TFTP open timeout error on the client machine

    Thanks,

    Finn,

You are correct, SMP 7.1 does indeed require Windows Server 2008 R2. However, you are getting this error when running SIM, is that correct? I have also installed the standard edition and am able to run SIM. Do you have .NET 3.5 SP1 installed?

there is not an option to define a port when adding an Active Directory default connection

For those using the Real Time System Manager Redirection, the .dll fix for this is now available and attached as Altiris.PluggableProtocols.AMTRedirSvcTypeLibrary.zip.

Here's the information from the "Known Issues" doc and how to apply this fix:

Real-Time System Manager : The redirection functionality is blocked.
To resolve this, do the following:
    1. Download .zip from the 7.1 Beta Symantec Connect page.
    2. Extract the "Altiris.PluggableProtocols.AMTRedirSvcTypeLibrary.dll" file.
    3. Copy the file to the "C:\windows\assembly" folder.
    4. Run "iisreset" command in command line.

Has anyone seen this?  While I can add a user account and tie it to a role such as Symantec Administrators in domain format "Domain\user".....I cannot get this to work for groups in this format:  "domain\groupname".

For now, I will have to setup everyone individually, howeve that is a pain as we are a huge enterprise.

I know there was an 'idea' created some time back to have this brought back (along with the blue copy clipboard from NS6)

I think if they arent being brought back, it would be really great if Symantec could explain why not, it may help us understand the reasoning behind it.

***updated***   thanks Justin, just seen your comment now

At this time all I can say is; there are plans.laugh

    Oct 14, 2010 02:30 PM

Justin - is this something that's planned?

I'd love to see the return of something we had in Livestate - an indicator on the actual computer icon showing when that computer is doing something or has a problem.  I remember the red lightning bolt for when a job failed on a given machine being the most-requested feature from my users when we migrated from LSD to Altiris 6.9.

Also useful would be other indicators showing other activity.  Perhaps an icon of a CD on the pc indicating that it's imaging, or an hourglass showing that it's waiting for something.  For me, the little clock showing that it was on a 30-day license in 6.9 was useless, so maybe that could be re-purposed?

    Oct 14, 2010 02:17 PM

Correct.  There currently is not an indicator of status like there is with the DS 6.x win32 console.

    Oct 14, 2010 01:50 PM

It seems like you still cant 'easily' see if a computer is active or not in the DS 7.1 console....am i wrong?

apparently R2 brought some pretty significant changes with it - initially, SEP wouldn't play nice with it either and we had to downgrade to plain 2008 to solve the problem.  seems to me if it's going to be that significantly different, it needs a completely different version number, not just an incremental one.  But then again, it seems MS is having fun making up their own versioning rules - witness the whole .net mess, and of course let's not forget Windows "7" :)

Proceed with caution, as the release notes explicitly state Analytics does not work with SQL Server 2008 R2.

    Oct 14, 2010 08:58 AM

    ChristophMueller,

You can use SQL 2008 R2 or SQL 2008 standard, whichever you choose.

Also install Silverlight v3, Java 6 and adobe flash v10.

Based on the Altiris_IT_Management_Suite_Beta_Guide_7.1_0.zip I suppose the SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 are supported/recommended for ITSM 7.1 beta.

SQL 2008 R2 (better call it SQL2009 to avoid confusion) is supported only partly by ITSM 7.1 beta, so it is not recommended for use, but should be fully supported by ITSM 7.1 (not beta) afterwards.

Just a thought but do any of the following work?
To disable the check for SIM prerequisites:
Add the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\AIM to the registry.
Create a DWord called IgnoreInstallPrerequisites and set the value to 1.
To enable the Next button if any of the install Readiness checks fail:
Add the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\AIM\InstallRea dinessCheck\ to the registry. Create a DWord called EnableNextbutton and set the value to 1

Does IT Analytics  work with SQL 2008 but just not 'R2' ?

    Oct 14, 2010 06:06 AM

    Altiris_IT_Management_Suite_Beta_Guide_7.1_0.zip:

SQL Server: You can use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or 2008 and install it on the same server as the platform. If Symantec Installation Manager does not detect a supported version of Microsoft SQL Server, it offers to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express.

    ITMS_7_1_BETA_Known_Issues.zip:

IT Anylytics: IT Anylictics does not currently work with SQL version 2008 R2. This issue is intended to be resolved before final release.

    Pretty clear, isn't it? :)

    Oct 14, 2010 05:59 AM

Windows 2008 R2 only exist in a 64 bit version so that is a given :-)

    Regards,

    Oct 14, 2010 05:40 AM

You may find its 2008 Server R2 64bit that is needed.  As far as I know, 7.1 will not run on a 32bit OS

    Oct 14, 2010 05:30 AM

Win 2008 R2 is clear. But what is with the SQL Server?

In the documentation I was not able to find if SQL Server 2008 R2 is allowed or not.

    Oct 14, 2010 04:59 AM

That is not what it says on the attached screenshot.

    Regards,

    Oct 14, 2010 04:52 AM

The Pre-Req's for ITMS 7.1 is Windows 2008 R2 64bit, IIS 7.5 is also used but you need to also install version 6 compatibility.  SQL 2008 is best too.  Silverlight v3, Java 6 and adobe flash v10

    Oct 14, 2010 04:23 AM

I just check mine also R2 version..

    Oct 14, 2010 04:09 AM

    Hi

I'm pretty sure the requirement for SMP 7.1 is Windows 2008 R2. That would explain your error (which is slightly different from mine).

    Regards

    Oct 14, 2010 03:49 AM

Yup I also facing the same issue.  My platform is a Windows 2008 Standard 64bits SP1.

    Oct 14, 2010 02:52 AM

    Hi

I get an error (see attachment) saying

Installation of SIM cannot proceed. The following requirement(s) were not met:

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or latest Server edition of Windows is required.

when I fire up the SIM Installer. This seems REALLY odd given that I'm running Windows 2008 R2 Standard. What is the problem here? What can I do to get past this check so I can actually install the SIM?

    Regards,
