Lenovo Laptop Battery Recall Finder

Sep 29, 2006 02:35 PM

Are you wondering how you're going to track down the Lenovo laptops you own that are subject to the latest battery recall? Here's a tool that leverages Altiris technologies and returns your very own list of laptops that are running on borrowed time.

Run the GetStatus.bat file in a package and it will upload the status into a new custom inventory table for you.

A couple of notes...you need to do a "custom package path". The BATTINFO.exe will not run in any path that contains spaces (like c:\program files\altiris\altiris agent....)

Also, the modification of the output into an NSI is handled by the extract.exe (source code in Perl in extract.pl).

I had a few thinkpads back before that part of IBM was sold and liked the speed compared to some hp laptops i had or compaq they were in those years. Lenovos I personally think are only good to give to have companies lease for employees otherwise some new HP and Dell have really nice specs and designs.

That's correct. The battinfo.exe program predates the second recall, so it doesn't know about it.
When I do my report, in the "WHERE" clause, I put an OR between the batteryrecalled=Yes or batteryfru=...

The system I posted for the earlier recall works for the new one...
One of the columns in the custom inventory is the BatteryFRU, and Lenovo has posted the FRU that is impacted by this latest recall, so just add it to your SQL WHERE clause, and voila, you've got your new recalls....I modified my report in about 15 minutes and had the report to our IT Managers worldwide within 30 minutes of being informed.

Has anyone tried looking for battery from a different vendor?
I have a large amount of Dell laptops and I found some batteries on the recall list.
I don't know if this tool could be helpful also in my case.
Thanks
Paolo

Seems to have been a bug with the first version of this tool posted here. For an updated version take a look at this post in the forums.
Tried it with my T43 that didn't work in the beginning and now it seems to be ok.

Right now I'm sitting in front of one of several T43 that didn't show up in my report. I was running the tool from C:\TEMP and after inserting a PAUSE in the batch file the output of battinfo.exe was "ERROR: Battery not installed or detected." followed by an "ERROR: Could not read battery information".
In this case a custom inventory entry gets created with 'Battery11sNum' = '92P10131Z8PE45J2AV' and 'RecallStatus' = 'not_recalled'. I ran this on several Desktops (no battery...) to confirm this.
When I run the original Battery Check from the Lenovo WebSite with the BatteryCheck.exe it works fine...
Just FYI, Chris
