Symantec Workspace Virtualization Admin tool locks up - FIX

Mar 27, 2014 05:13 PM

Issue:

  • Symantec Workspace Virtualization Admin tool locks up when trying to create a new layer.
  • Virtual layers fail to be delivered through Client Management Suite.
  • Virtual Composer fails to create a new virtual package.

Problem:

Computers that already have the Symantec Workspace Virtualization plugin; Symantec Workspace Virtualization Admin; or Virtual Composer installed and are prepared for image capture using MS Sysprep or using the Prepare Image for Capture feature through Deployment Solution will not be able to use these items until the registry is updated with the current volume GUID.

Solution:

If you suspect that your computer had these applications installed and it was sysprepped or Prepared for Image Capture using Deployment Solution, you can run the attached script. What the attached script will do:

  • The script will first verify that the virtualization products were installed;
  • If the products were not installed, the script will exit.
  • The script will then check the volume GUID and compare it to the existing value in the registry;
  • If the value is the same, NO CHANGE WILL BE MADE AND THE SCRIPT WILL EXIT - you have a different problem;
  • If the key value exists and is different to the value found in the volume GUID, the registry value (NOT THE ENTIRE KEY) will be updated;
  • If an error in the process occurs, the script will exit out.
  • Action will only be taken if the value exists and is different than what is found in the volume GUID.

How to use the attached file:

There are several ways to use the attached file. I will only cover two simpe ways to do so in this document.

You can simply copy the file to the affected computer and double-click the file. You may see a command window, but it should disappear.

  • To verify the script completed. Try opening any of the affected products and try to create an empty layer. The script was successful if you are able to create a new layer.
  • To further verify, you will need a command prompt open and the Registry Editor open.
  • In the command prompt, type mountvol.exe c: /L
  • Note the GUID
  • In the Registry Editor, navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\
  • Ready the value for DefaultFileRedirect and compare it to the value in the command window.

The second way is to deliver the script to your managed computers using Client Management Suite.

  • First open the attached file and edit.
  • Copy the text from the batch file;
  • From the Symantec Management Console, navigate to Manage>Jobs and Tasks;
  • Create a new task from a folder of your choice;
  • From the New Task window, select Run Script;
  • Name your script;
  • Select Command Script from the script type drop-down menu;
  • Paste the copied text into the body;
  • Set the Script and Task options from the Advanced... button;
    • Be sure to set the window to hidden (Script tab) and the timing for the script to run, i.e. 5 minutes (Task options tab). It should only take a second to run.
  • Save and run on affect computers.
