Breach Presentation Abstract & Presenter Bio:
It’s bad enough if your company is the victim of an online attack. But if hackers manage to steal personally identifiable information from your network, your troubles are only beginning. Since 2003, 46+ states have passed breach notification laws. In short, if your company does business with citizens of states that have these laws in place, you may need to report the breach to not only your customer victims, but the appropriate state authorities as well.
Enter Congress – while some federal breach notification legislation has passed as part of HIPAA and GLB, there is no comprehensive federal law that would govern breach notification. The current Congress is considering several bills, and the Obama White House has offered a proposal on breach notification. This talk will present a brief history of breach notification laws over the past 8 years, as well as present the pros & cons and politics of federal breach notification laws currently under consideration.
Glenn Brzuziewski is an attorney with an emphasis on technology law. He recently completed his SANS GLEG (legal). He is also the managing partner of Hurricane Labs.
