  • 1.  Additional NBS Server not receiving the WINPE configs

    Posted Apr 14, 2016 01:05 PM

I recently modified one of our Site Servers to use NBS. I think I have everything done, except for winpe builds that I use on our primary NBS server. I have a cloned NBS General Settings for the new NBS setup specifically for it. The pre-existing Winpe's are setup for Unknown and Managed Computers. Agent on the new NBS was updated. Can't I have my pre-existing winpe builds that I made in Preboot Configurations go to the new NBS? Or will I have to make new Winpe for the new NBS? I would think it is that easy.

    Hi MJammer,

you can use your existing winpe builds for the new NBS.

    Best regards

That what I am understanding. It wouldn't make life easer to have multiple builds of winpe. I heard this morning from a source that I need to clone the NBS General Settings; and have one for each of our NBS Servers. So far we have been using one server with NBS and the General Settings were never clone by the previous Admin. Now we are moving to a second NBS; so the General Settings need to be cloned. One for Server A and a second set of settings for Server B?

You'll need to clone the NBS General Settings only if you need to have your NBS servers to differ from one another. For example, if you have one location where you build and test images, you may have the Redeployment (managed computers) enabled. You may also have the Initial Deployment boot enabled, but in your field sites, you may only have the redeployment option enabled. Other considerations could be mtu size capabilities at one location over another... Logging levels, etc. So the rule of thumb is, whenever you NEED to have a site server to have a specific configuration that is outside of your norm, then you'd clone the settings; remove the device from the existing target; add the device to the new settings policy.

    Mjammer,

We are on 7.6 HF6. We have 2 NBS servers (two different physical locations/subnets) and they both use the same general NBS settings and WinPE builds with no issues. As Jesse stated you only need to clone if they will be different from each other.

I'll revert back to having one General Setting. We began with one server with NBS and used the existing General Settings; we did not clone it. Recently i added NBS to a site server, no cloning, all the network boot stuff went ot the additional site server but the WinPE setups I have.

I am going to keep separate NBS General Settings, just in case. Anyway, my winpe's are not going to additional site server. I installed NBS under site server settings, updated the agent on taht site server and everything began installing. Then I cloned the General Settings for the site server, but no winpe's are going to the site server. I can pxe boot but all I have to choose is 'Next Device (BIOS/EFI). Shouldn't my winpe x64 and x86 get there by performing the above mentioned tasks?

Twister, how do my existing winpe's get to the new nbs server? Should they get there automatically once NBS is installed and general settings are cloned and set for that new nbs server? Seems cut and dry, almost.

MJammer, by chance have you tried recompiling WinPE yet?  I would be curious to note if you see any activity on your SS.

You mean 'Recreate the Preboot Environment' in the console under Preboot Configurations? If so, yes I did that. I even built a brand new Winpe Environemnt for 5.1. I installed WAIK for Windows 8.1 on the SMP this morning. We have Microsfot Surface Tablets to image so i needed to upgrade from WinpE 4.0 to 5.0 or 5.1. Did that upgrade, created a second winpe for 5.1. Nothing is happening after 2 hours.

The first/primary NBS isn't even getting the winpe 5.1. I wonder if there is something bigger going on I am not aware of. I am not seeing my 5.1 winpe under the path below:
