  • 1.  After upgrade to Deployment Server 6.9 SP2 - can't get PC's to load PXE DOS/WinPE

    Posted May 21, 2009 01:39 AM

As the title says - but before I start to carry on, I'll give the spec.'s of the servers involved:

    DS - Windows 2003 SP2 R2, SQLExpress 2005

    DHCP/PXE server - Windows 2008

Now I am not going beat around the bush here, the SP2 upgrade did not go as planned. I ended up (with the help of our DBA) having to restore the DS DataBase, which went fine.

The only issue I have now is that I cannot get the PXE working again - well, fully working again. PXE is working (main site and five remote sites), where PC's get and connect with DHCP. The issue is that we have been using DOS to connect back to the DHCP/DS server, which then connects back to the DS.

In the DOS it down loads fine, but then gets an error that it cannot authenticate to the network and gets a buffer overflow error - Error 36.

WinPE - even though I have re-created the WinPE boot disk, now I am getting an error - TFTP download failed Press any key to reboot..

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I have used all my google-fu in trying to find a solution to this. The Altiris KB and this forum do have some excelent doco, but even following that to the letter is not working for me.

    Cheers,

    Casey

Not sure if this wil fix ur problem, but just upgraded from 6.8 SP2 to 6.9 SP3 and guess what had to rebuilt PXE. But i read a while back that, if like me u have the Serial number as unique identifier that after an upgrade you have to choose 2 options. (I choose Serial and Mac) TOOLS> Options>Global>Primary Lookup Key.
If i only had 1 tick WinPE through up a error

    Hope this helps someone.

    Cheers

We've upgrade from 6.8 to 6.9 as instructed by Symantec support so that we could bypass PXE redirection and use a Token to reference the package server.   The Token reference didn't seem to work because it was still taking forever to download the DOS, Linux bootdisk.  The same thing is happening when we tried to setup PXE redirection.  The PXE server installs fine, but when we we setup a MS VM to boot to PXE it takes about 10mins to finish loading the boot disk, whether it's DOS or Linux.  At the main DS server site, both the DOS and Linux boot disk take no more than 2 to 3mins.

We've already contacted Symantec support and they've been unable to resolve this issue.

    Any ideas?

I am having similar problems.  I will list them separately and provide you with the solutions I found and still wondering if anyone has an answer for the problem I have not solved.

    Initially I had the problem:
Issue:  error that it cannot authenticate.
Answer:   I created a local PXE Mapping Account on the DS Server
Added this account into the Permission of the eXpress (Deployment Server) folder
Gave this account Full Control and pushed it to all inherent folder
Added this account to this account the the eXpress Share
Add this account into step 5 of the WinPE

Issue:  The HP7900 Desktop will not launch image
It mounts the F: drive but then I receive a message that it can not find the .exe in my image script.  All of my other Desktops and Laptops image fine.

Product Name: HP Compaq dc7900 Small Form Factor
    I have:
selected SATA and IDE and both fail
let the computer add itself to the console and added it to the console and neither works

Does anybody have any idea what I should do?

I found my problem with the HP7900.  They have a a Restore partition mounted.  It is serving as the F: drive.  Once the harddrive in reformated the F: drive mounts properly.
