  • 1.  Altiris 8.1 Site Server on Windows 2016 Core

Did anyone tested Site Server on Windows 2016 Core? Especially PS and/or TS.

    (ITMS 8.1 RU5)

This below article does not mention any limitations for specific editions of Win 2016:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO125454

    Any experience is welcome.

That's a very ambiguous TN to be honest. No mention of Core at all or in the Compatibility Matrix. If you don't get your answer here then reach out to the support team.

My first thoughts would be that it isn't supported with Core being a stripped down version of normal Windows for security purposes, but I would be interested to know the answer!

    Cheers!

    I have checked MATRIX again - https://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO9965 - updated on October 16th 2018.

Message is much better now = in Table 1-8 there is this note for Windows 2016:

    • "Note, that only Windows Server 2016 Desktop Experience version is supported."

You can read more in https://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO125454 - statement about WIndows 2016 Supoport.

First section -  sentence reads that:

    • "Note, that only Desktop Experience version is supported."

Well, I have tested that SMA 8.1 can be installed on Windows 2016 Core (and also Inventory Scanning works well):

I was even able to configure PS role on that server, but providing UNC codebases only:

I guess that is because IIS and .NET instrumentation is missing in Core edition

I did that IIS stuff configuration remotely (via Server Tools from another Windows 2016 Desktop) - but local SMA was not able to verify and complete that configuration, due to absent instrumentation.

Very probably, just for those reasons, we cannot expect miracles in that area.

My personal optinion only - and I wish I am wrong ;-)
