  • 1.  Better to put SEP to the Exchange server or to clients running Outlook??

    Posted Oct 04, 2010 04:46 PM

My understanding is that if one installs SEP to one's Exchange server, enabling Outlook mail protection is not necessary.

If one does not install SEP to one's Exchange server or one's Exchange server is protected by SAV until SAV is replaced by SEP, is it a good idea to install the SEP client to the clients running Outlook anyway (with Outlook protection enabled)??

The Outlook clients are also Citrix servers...

    Suggestions, information, etc. appreciated.

    Thank you, Tom

No need of outlook protection on exchange..out autoprotect is only for outlook client it will not protect your mailbox on exchange.

To protect your Outlook Client on the Client machines you should enable outlook autoprotect..

To protect Mailbox for exchange symantec has a different product Symantec Mail Security for Exchange

Sorry, I know Outlook protection is not installed on the Exchange server itself.

I'm asking about putting Outlook protection on OTHER servers/computers running Outlook if Exchange server does not have SEP client etc. installed.

    Thank you...

For all machines running outlook you should install outlook autoprotect..however if you have protection for your Exchange mailbox like SMS MSE then you won't need Outlook autoprotect on the clients.

Even if SEP is installed on your Exchange server it will not protect your exchange..it will only protect your file system.

    Ohhhhhhh...now I understand :)

Thank you, I will proceed with the original plan to install Outlook protection to our Citrix servers, I got confused with SAV vs. SEP settings and not wanting to overdo things etc.

    We don't use SMS MSE.

    Thank you, Tom

We withdrew the Outlook client protection from our clients after it was determined that the exchange mailboxes are protected.

Our client computers run much faster without the SEP outlook client.

    Hello khaskins82,

Would you please clarify your remark??

Did you install SMS Mail Security or did you determine that SEP itself protected your mailboxes adequately??

    Thank you, Tom
