Curious as to how to actually utilize the Instant Messenger scanner on Symantec's Brightmail 8.0 appliance:

**I am NOT asking how to set it up on the appliance - that is straight forward.***

I am asking what it takes to send all internal and external IM traffic to filter through the Brightmail Gateway 8.0.  Unlike smtp which uses a single port [25], IM traffic first tries to communicate over high numbered ports [above 1024] and if that failes the Instant Messenger clinets usually use 80 or 443.

So how is it possible to forward all IM traffic from a list of different IM clients like Yahoo, AIM, MSN, SKYPE thru the Brightmail gateway, and NOT take the usual path through the default gateway to the cloud??

Said another way:  is there anyway to simply redirect IM traffic inside the LAN to Brightmail's scanner?  Without having to install an enterprise IM solution.

My hunch is that it takes a boat load of Forward Lookup Zones on the internal DNS server(s).
Or else some sort of port redirection via a proxy server [like ISA].

    Thanks!

    **Note**
There is nothing of value in the Administrator's Guide offering any insight to this.

    Hello,

Our Administration guide does not have much information about how to configure the DNS side of things for IM filtering. However, our install guide has all of this for you. The admin guide is more for adminstering our product. Not so much on the environmental side, so I understand your confusion.

You can find the information at the following link:
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/documentation.jsp?language=english&view=manuals&pid=53991

If you download the installation guide, all of the IM information is included starting on page 24.

But yes, you are correct in that the forwarding can be done within your internal DNS. Keep in mind please that the appliance implementation is fairly limited on what it can do compared to the actual IM Manager product.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Thanks!
