  • 1.  Can I uninstall with a virus in quarentine?

    Posted Dec 11, 2009 09:53 PM
    1. I have an old version of symantec antivirus (corporate edition) 8.00.9374 on my windows xp os.
    2. The program won't run any scans...i get a "Symantec antivirus has encountered a problem and needs to close" window with every attempt.
    3. Advice after sending an error report sends me on a wild goose chase through symantec's website with no help or solutions in sight.
    4. I'd like to uninstall the whole thing and start with some new antivirus software....but...there is a virus being held in quarentine (Trojan. Pidief. C)
    5. Where does this virus end up if I uninstall symantec antivirus...is it safe to unistall?
    6. Do i need to upgrade? if so to what version?
    Thanks
    s.

Ps.  I recently upgraded to a new version of Ad-Aware by Lavasoft...would this have caused the problem with SAV?

Do you have a valid license?
If yes it is better to upgrade to SEP
    The latest version is RU5(11.0.5.xxx.xx)
It can be downloaded from https://fileconnect.symantec.com using the product sl. no.
While uninstalling the SAV it will give option for deleting the quarantine files .In my opinion it is better to delete these files since that file is affected with virus and it can harm the system...

well i entered my license # but it seems it's not valid.
my license type is server/client gold (mfg only)
i'm not quite sure what that means...but it guess it doesn't mean a much as far as an upgrade goes.

so i can uninstall without jeoprodizing my system as long as i delete the infected file when prompted?
then i guess i just go buy a new download of SEP.

    thanks

Seems like it has reached end of life cyle.. thats why the problem with liveupdate.
when new viruses come, new definitions should take care, the virus is quarantine. it would scan when new defs arrive.
the virus might still be in your machine and might have disabled symantec, thats the reason why scan is not happening.
I would suggest you to run a full scan using symantec online scan.
upgrade your version to newever sav 10.x or sep 11,
as far as quarentine is concerned ,yes you can delete those folders without any issues.
if you manually want to delete those folders you need to assign permissions and delete the folder.
    F:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\Quarantine

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/sav-corporate-9-end-life

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/error-0x20000058 check shp suggestion ,run full scan only after that upgrade your antivirus.

    Do as follows
    purchase/renew the license with symantec
Scan in safemode with NSS tool
(refer the comment of shp download NSS and SCAN)
Remove Present version and install SEP (I will recommend SEP because while comparing to SAV it is much effective )

Always keep your pcs updated with latest virus defs and patches..
