Can the Small Business Edition client be managed by regular/enterprise SEP

We have SEP 11.0.5 on thousands of servers and workstations.  We are joining with a smaller organization that is running SEP Small Business Edition v12.  Can my SEPM manage those clients once we put them on our domain, or will we need to uninstall their SEPSME v12 clients and install our SEP 11.0.5 client?

I'm doubting I can manage the newer client, since I assume the components and features may be different between the two products, not to mention the higher version number then what we have in SEP.  So if we have to uninstall and reinstall clients I've requested we do that, get them updated and get clean full system scans, before joining them to our domain.

    Thanks.

Unfortunately, no.  They are different branches of the same tree, but can't be cross managed.

SEP for Small Business 12 is not a newer version than 11, but rather a pared down version of 11 designed for less complicated management.  You would be better off removing the 12 clients and installing 11 on them.

PS. Edit: Also strongly suggest bringing SEP 11 to RU6a (11.0.6005) then to RU6 MP2 (11.0.6200) smiley

Less complicated means less options. +1 to Sandra :D

I would like to add that unfortunatelly it is not possible to migrate SEP 12 clients to SEP 11. They should be uninstalled first.

    Thanks for the info guys!

And yes, believe me I'm anxious to get up to RU6 MP2, primarily to get rid of the XFER bug that is throwing off all my risk reporting numbers.  Other than that I've had no issues with 11.0.5 and consider it to be extremely solid in our enviornment.

Trouble is this is going to take multiple client reboots, so I have a procedure to go through for authorization.  One other semi-related question, I'm assuming I will advertise the RU6a clients to my group install packages with a reboot required afterward, but then I will need to wait a few days until all of them finish upgrading before I can advertise the RU6 MP2 package, right?  In other words would it be smart enough to perform both upgrades and reboots back to back in the correct sequence if I were to advertise both packages to the groups at the same time without waiting days inbetween?

    Thanks.

    Clamu,

You can upgrade your clients directly from RU5 to RU6 MP2 :-)

I would like to follow this up with a huge CAVEAT that the supported migration path is

    RU5 > RU6a > RU6 MP2

In all likelihood it should work fine, but if something goes wrong, it's NOT supported.

Another thread started by Pawel indicates the release notes say, for the two RU6 maintenance patches respectively:

Symantec Endpoint Protection RU6 MP1 (11.0.6100) provides fixes since the release of RU6 and RU6a. This maintenance patch cannot be installed over any versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection or Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager prior to RU6. It must be installed over RU6 or RU6a.

    and

This maintenance patch cannot be installed over any versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection or Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager prior to RU6. It must be installed over RU6, RU6a, or RU6-MP1.

There is a distinction made; SEP (meaning the client) is specified.

Hmm interesting.  I'll have to browse around the forum and see if I can get a feel for how many other people have had good luck with the unsupported migration path.  If there is a high likelihood of success out there I might be willing to try it.  If there's even a 25% chance of issues though I would rather not and stick with the supported path.

So if I stuck to the supported path, would the install packages be smart enough to perform both upgrades and reboots back to back in the correct sequence if I were to advertise both packages to the groups at the same time?

    Thanks.

Other  option is to have all SEP 12 clients managed by  installing  a SPC console in the  network segment. Then , you can access  it using webconsole, from anywhere in the  networ!
