Atttempting to move from old version of Endpoint Protection  to Norton Antivirus 2011 on Windows XP SP3. After removing and installing, we get error "VpShellRes.dll could not be found" (and another dll that no longer is causing problems) any time we're working with files on Windows Explorer.  Worked with Norton techs on two occasions.  They have run application called NoNav 2.611 which stopped the first DLL error, but does not in the end seem to have stopped the second.  We have run the Norton Removal Tool, but while got rid of Norton AV2011, Symantec EP still seems to be hanging around in some form.  The second Norton tech attempted to remove it manually by deleting several registry items and files. That still has left several files in \Program Files\Symantec that they have not been able to delete, and we still get the error message. They have thrown up their hands and say that we need to contact Symantec Enterprise support to get help.

How do I get this thing removed to get rid of the error?

If the manual removal instructions fail, then you will need the CW tool from Symantec support.

How to manually uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection client from Windows 2000, XP and 2003, 32-bit Editions - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH102261&locale=en_US

If you have any problems with getting support, PM me.

Thanks.  I also found another thread that said to manually go through and delete references to VpShell in the registry, which I did and rebooted and the error message is gone. I have reinstalled NAV 2011 now, and don't want to damage that installation with the CW Tool. By the way, Thomas K, your link seems to be dead and redirects to a generic KB search page. [Edit: Works now, not sure what the problem was a few minutes ago.]

I'm wondering if I should just leave everything the way it is, even though I can clearly see lots of Symantec stuff in the registry.

The Cleanwipe tool will remove Norton AV. If Norton is working fine, then I would leave it alone.

The link works for me, but here is the United States and Canada

OK, since things seem to be working, I'm leaving it as is.  I'm bookmarking the manual removal instructions, even though that seems like a lot of stuff to go through.

Sorry I wasn't clear, but the link that wasn't working on my first few attempts was the link to the Manual Instructions, not the contact link.  As I said, though, it seems to be working fine now.

You can download the ShellExView tool from nirsoft and simply right-click and disable the extension. It also allows you to remove items.
