I'm a university student who downloaded the SEP 32 bit setup file from the university IT store.  Prior to installation, I uninstalled McAfee Internet Security 2009.  When I initiate the installation I get a dialogue box labeled "Setup BD".   The first message states "Installing network drivers. Please wait. . ."  and is followed by "Network drivers successfully installed."  Installation ceases at this point.

    Thus far I have:
    1.  Cleaned registry.
    2. Downloaded and run the McAfee product uninstall program.
    3. Downloaded and run the Norton uninstall program.
    4.  Uninstalled Spybot S & D.

University tech support suggested a new download and an install from safe mode with networking.  No luck, same results. Same results if I run the file from the IT site.  They now suggest that I bring my computer to the home campus (120 miles away) for them to look at.

I should add that I have administrator permissions and that I've run the SEP Advisor program--which indicates no problems for install.

    Any suggestions?

Its a different application, but the same solution (I suspect) - something is taking over setup.exe - I suspect even if you click Start, Run and type setup.exe <Enter> it will run the same app.

Take a look here for more info: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/sep-setup-problem

    That's exactly what happens.

    I didn't try that yet.

I ran a search using "setup bd" as the parameters.  I found:

SETUPBD.EXE-307D225F.pf   in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch     56 KB  PF file   modified today
    SetupBD.din                                in C:\WINDOWS\system32     2 KB  DIN file  modified 11/3/2003

    Any thought?

Check this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\setup.exe

That should tell you exactly what application its running

If you then blank it out, the setup.exe for SEP should work properly.

I've run regedit.  This is what I see:

    (Default)                                       REG_SZ                C:\drivers\network\onboard\Setup.exe
    BlockOnTSNonInstallMode      REG_DWORD     0x00000001 (1)
    Path                                               REG_SZ                C:\drivers\network\onboard
    RunAsOnNonAdminInstall       REG_DWORD      0x00000001 (1)

I don't recognize the icons in front of each line; lines 1 & 3 have what looks to be a page with ab on it, lines 2 & 4 have the same page with what appears to be two lines of binary code.

    I don't recognize this as being an application. . . .

Should I delete this and leave the path?

blank out the (Default) option, so that (Default) is there, but not set to anything.

Then the SEP setup.exe should work

At the moment, any call to setup.exe is running your network driver install located in C:\Drivers\Network\Onboard

    Okay.

To make sure I completely understand, I'm going to blank out everything to the right of (Default) on line 1 and leave everything else; that is, lines 2, 3, and 4.

    Correct?

yes, thats correct, just remove everything from the line next to (Default) by double clicking (Default) to open the entry, then pressing Delete, then hit OK

    Then install SEP
