    hello all,

need your help. im not a computer tech. pc keeps on displaying disk space warning so have been cleaning up every bootup. just found out yesterday that virus defs used up more than 90% of the diskspace. unfortunately, it wont allow me to delete any file/folder in the virusdefs folder and diskspace is down to 60+ MB. warning says "cannot delete file. access denied. make sure disk is not full or write protected and the file is not currently in use." have tried doing the steps below :

    start run -> smc -stop

    services.msc stop

    Symantec Endpoint Protection service

but pc cant locate smc and Symantec Endpoint Protection service. have downloaded Unlocker 1.9.1 but to no avail. it says "no locking handle found..." i clicked on the delete action anyway. but still says "object could not be deleted. do you want to perform the requested delete operation at next reboot?"

my norton product : Norton Internet Security 2006 LiveUpdate version 3.2.0.68

would appreciate your immediate replies. wont pc crash due to low memory? thanks in advance!

    Hi,

I think something should be clarified:

    1) Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) is NOT Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2006

    2) This forum is only for SEP, there is a dedicated forum for NIS

    3) How big is that folder? How many subfolders does it contain? How big is your HDD?

    4) NIS cannot be "damaged" so easily otherwise viruses would do it...

    5) Have you tried to repair/reinstall it?

    6) NIS 2012 is coming...

Run Cleanwipe or if you have NIS then run norton removal tool and then re-install SEP or NIS whatever you have installed.

Symanec Endpoint Protection and Norton Antivirus may be from the same company. But they do work differently. Different security policies are in effect.

    The Norton Community is here:

    http://community.norton.com/norton/?category.id=nis

    Anyway:

For the definitions. You may want to try to perform a system cleanup first. But then, you're using a very old version of Norton. Try obtaining the latest version of the software. That would most likely fix your problem. Newer versions have better resource management.

    1. yes you're right. im sorry. i made a mistake. that is why the SEP can not be found in the PC when i tried to search for it.

    2. so ill have to look for the forum on NIS 2006?

    3. virusdef folder size 65.9GB, size on disk 63.2GB. 1510 subfolders 29529 files. i dont know how the folder accumulated so many files/subfolders. this PC is my relative's, over 5 yrs old and i have begun to used it a few months ago only. drive C: capacity 70.9GB, used space 70.3GB and free space 177MB.

    4. ok. i do not know if it is damaged. can you recommend any good norton antivirus program that i can save on my flashdrive usb to check my desktop?

    5. no i have not tried repairing / reinstalling yet. don't i need to uninstall first before reinstallation. im afraid of deleting, might accidentally remove something impt.

    6. im planning to get the latest antivirus tool/internet security tool as soon as i resolve this. hope you can help me. thanks so much

    1. OK

    2. yes, you have

    3. this is not normal

    4. yes, http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx?lcid=1031&NUCLANG=en-us

    5. repair = control panel > add or remove programs > search for Norton 2006 > click "modify" or "change" > select "repair"

reinstall = uninstall (control panel > add or remove programs > search for Norton 2006 > click "remove") and then install it again from the CD

    6. try steps 4 and 5, if still no luck, get rid of Norton 2006 and install the new version

I have a Dell Home PC in which Norton SystemWorks 2006 operating under Windows XP.  SystemWorks was installed in 2006.

PROBLEM: The Virus Definitions folder (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs) occupies 77.8% of the space or approximately 52.6 gigabytes of memory.  Only 186 megabytes are free on the C:drive.  Compressing old files works only temporarily as the drive is steadily filled up with Virus Definitions.

The first type and most numerous hoggish file folder I can not get rid of to save memory is:  "tmp704d.tmp" which was added on 16-Oct-2011 (occupies 333 mB).  If I could only get rid of file folders  "tmp****.tmp", I would free up approximately 49.4 gigabytes.

The second type of file folder is less numerous, but can not be deleted:  "201111008.008" which was added on 08-Oct-2011 (occupies 266 mB).  The 20 file folders of this type occupies 3.23 gigabytes (GB).

My PC will soon FILL UP AND BECOME INOPERABLE AND USELESS -- unless someone can help me free up some disk drive space occupied by the Norton Virus definitions.  I am at the end of my rope - remaining memory in C-Drive is only 186 megabytes.  I hope someone at Symantec can provide a solution.

    Thanks,

    Guy Sandidge
