  • 1.  Client Migration Restore Fails.

Ok I have two tasks that I ran the first task was to create a user Migration Capture. I included most applications and the file it created appears to have all the data that I would want. I created 4 of these files for 4 different machines.

I have found my second task which is a Migration restore is not reliable. The first machine failed on the first attempt to restore yet worked on the second.  The second machine has failed 4 to 5 times with the following in the event log. "Details for: Put user profile package, failed to restore user data package on the client. (4294967295)". On my third computer the restore went just fine.

My environment is Ghost 11.0.1.1533 NT server 2003 R2

I am capturing the old data from an HP 530 C and I am trying to restore to a new machine Hp 770. They both have windows XP however the new machine does have Office 2007 vs. 2003 on the older machine.

I really want to use client migration often in our network environment but I never can make this task reliable.  If you can give me any information even if it is suggestions on where to get more advance log files to read to help diagnose the problem I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Hi Loren

The long return code indicates an exception of some kind. This behaviour is very unusual, and is something we would like to look into.

By default, the log level specifed on the migration tab is 'Full'. Check this is the case, then to obtain logs for a user migration operation, perform the operation, then zip up all the *.log files you can find in the client Program Files\Symantec\Ghost directory and upload these to us. Also upload the SCMData directory.

Separately, It might also be useful for us to see the logs contained in the package. To obtain these,  open the package , then on the Logs tab, choose Export logs.

I'll PM you with a user name and password for a secure upload area.

I am still having trouble, I have not sent you the files yet but I plan too. I had to manually do the user that I was getting errors with because of it being time sensetive. I have 3 more machines that I will be doing migrations on today and as soon as one fails I will grab up those files and post them like you ask in the private message.

I just wanted to give you a heads up.

O.k, that's great. Let me know when the upload is complete, and I'll take a look.

    Hi Loren,

Although I did not recieve logs from you, I did recently receive logs for a similar issue to that you originally described.

With the log information we were able to locate a possible source of the problem.

For the case we identified, it turns out to be an interaction during restore where the target filesystem is FAT32.

Did your target machines contain FAT32 disks or partitions?

    Thanks,
    Xan
