    Posted Nov 25, 2010 10:05 PM

Recently installed Sharepoint 2010 on our server that has the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager running.

Since then clients will not connect anymore, and have not updated.

Manager was not running, but after running the Configuration wizard again it runs, but i get the error unable to communicate with the reporting componet.

server is running windows server enterprise 64 bit

    checked services

    Symantec Embedded Database is started

Symantec Endpoint protection manager starts but then stops automatically

As you mentioned that Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager starts and the  stops, are you still able to login and getting "Unable to communicate with the reporting component" Error.

Because if the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service does not stay started the error that you should be getting is "Failed to connect to the Server"

If this is the case, below is an article for the same

Title: Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service stops with a Java -1 error in the event log
    Web URL: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH102415&locale=en_US

If possible please upload the scm-server-0.log file from C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\logs folder.

make it to run on 64 bit mode.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894435

Have been working through this kb article.

everything is fine untill the odbc connection

could not find it at first (64 bit windows)

but i have the 32 bit window open now.

it is there, checked all the settings, but the test connection still fails.

Connection failed: Database server not found.

I also have been working through remote desktop and I read that can be an issue, will go pay a visit to the server room shortly,

should i just rerun the management server configuration wizard locally?

now locally i checked the odbc settings

i noted the database file path was missing the .db off the end

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\sem5

fixed that and now i get connection successful in there

    done an issreset

but same error message when entering SEPM

the problme should be with your IUSR account in IIS,
    open IIS
    symantec webserver
    under directory security
put the currently logged in user name. apply okay
restart sepm service; and try again
if that works, then check the group of IUSR account,it should be memeber of domain users

    im going backwards again.

I had to physically move the server. now its in place, once booted up. I cant get the service to run again! but i have a different error now

The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of 1, the service is being stopped.

i did have the -1 error before now i get a code of 1. Very usefull error codes by the way.

I cant find any information on this error, any ideas?

    M Dunkerley,

Could you please tun Symantec Endpoint Protection Support Tool? We can try to guess that's the issue with this or that with no solutions for weeks.

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH105414

Please attach the log when done.

    Thanks.

ok so i looked though the log and first error is tomcat6.exe is using port 8005.

so i crashed that and atleast the clients are updating again

but still cant connect to the reporting component.

Communication fails with errors 407 and 503 - seems like IIS configuration issue.

Another error is "tcp port 8005 is being used by tomcat6.exe" - you probably have another tomcat running. Go to \Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\conf\server.xml and change the port from 8005 to 8006
