Hi,

Trying to connect to a remote system using Windows Live Messenger 2011. Assuming I have no issues in getting on the Internet and it's the remote system, what could stop it?

The remote system is Windows 7 with SEP 11.0.6100 also using WL Messenger 2011. It is hooked wired to a router with it's own firewall with the standard settings.

I have got the user to enable ports 3389 and 135 [going both directions just to be safe]. 

Locally also using Windows Live Messenger 2011. It asks me for a password when trying to connect but dies there after.

have you installed NTP module of the SEP? Does uninstalling it , you able to connect to remote machine, if yes then tune the firewall rules to meet your requirement(open port, protocol).

Does it works when SEP is disabled or uninstalled?

We need to first found out whether SEP is this  issue or a diffrent issue

Did you look for an blocking entry in the SEP logs at this client?

Hm, could you please open SEP client on a client machine and, in the left menu, choose
Show logs. Go to NTP - Show logs and choose package log. Is there any sign on the connection being blocked?

Didn't work when SEP was disabled as well.

Didn't try uninstalling or the remote logs. Have to get there the old fashioned way.

NTP is enabled.

If it did not work when SEP was disabled, it just might not be related to SEP...
