Yes, you can indeed do this. Make a boot disk (I recommend a boot CD) through the Ghost Boot Wizard, boot up the machine and choose Local > Disk > From Image to restore this. Then browse to the image on the USB drive. In the boot wizard, I recommend the Windows PE option. That should be all you need to restore it.

    Thank you,

    Randy

Are you talking about a USB stick or a USB hard disk?

USB sticks are normally formatted as FAT32 so you are limited to ghost images that are broken down into 2Gb files. If your Ghost image is a single file greater than 2Gb you will need an NTFS formatted device.

Are you intending to make the USB device bootable?  If so, PCDOS can only handle FAT32, whereas WinPE (recommended) will handle both FAT32 and NTFS file systems.

I believe GSS is able to make bootable USB media so you should be able to do exactly what you want.

I personally use a bootable WinPE USB device that I have made using the WAIK and then use an old version of Ghost (V8) at the command prompt, and that works fine for me.

    Hi Guys,

    Actual Scenario :

    - The Image (Partition Image - C Drive) is present on the Ghost cast server. So i created a Ghost cast Server session.

    - I booted the machine with no OS installed with a Standard Ghost Boot Disk (Win PE) and tried joining the Ghost Session but was not able to do so.

    - So is there a way in which i can copy the Image from the Ghost Server to a USB (Pen Drive) and then restore the machine with the help of the image stored in the Pen Drive.

    - Will the machine with no OS installed detect the Pen Drive while restoring. If so is there any restriction on the file system (NTFS or FAT32)????

In my experience, WinPE will mount USB devices that are present when WinPE is booting, and I have not noticed any issues with handling either FAT32 or NTFS USB devices.

If your machine is booting but not able to establish a connection to the Ghost session, it could be that your WinPE boot system lacks the correct VISTA driver for your machine's network card. Perhaps adding the correct driver would offer a simpler solution to your current situation.

    Hi Guys,

In my case I'll be taking a backup of the image and restoring it

on a machine with no OS installed with Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet NIC card. SO should i use the default one present or i need to add new or updated drivers

And after adding the drivers will I be able to restore it through the Ghostcast Server Session

    Hi Dishant,

You would need to add the drivers to the WinPE boot package with the help of the Boot Wizard. Once you do that, make sure you have a bootable CD (which can also be created using the Boot Wizard). Please use the video in the below link that would give you the details of how a NIC driver can be added. Once you have the driver added and the client machine booted up into Ghost, you could connect to the Ghost Cast Session.

    Hope this helps !
