Creating a Win10 image with VMWare Workstation

I recently asked support for some information on best practices for creating a win10 image and was provided some outdated links (see below), so I wrote up an article with the steps I followed for creating a base win10 image using VMWare (tested with 1511 and 1607).

Let me know if anyone has any feedback for improving my process.  I still have a bit more learning to do with cleaning up the start menu.

In case anyone from Symantec sees this, maybe they should test the process to confirm if these articles are no longer valid (which is what I found) HOWTO125161 & TECH223595.

One thing to keep in mind.

If you use Symantec Workspace Virtualization, it will cause all of your 1607 machines to BSOD.

We have been working with Symantec for months on this and they said that a fix was coming soon.

We noticed that they EOLed  this product yesterday 1/2/1017 while we have a active case open.

They didn't even tell us they were going to discontinue the product all this time we were working with them to move from 1511 to 1607.

Can you please let us know where you found this EOL announcement, as I have searched the virtualization forums and could not find it?

Can you please let us know how you came about this EOL announcement, as I could not find it within the virtualization forums?

    Hi SK.

They sent an email yesterday talking about the Workspace Virtualization and Streaming EOL. Probably they will post anything about that very soon.

    Regards,

As soon as I started reading your post I was thinking.. I think I read somewhere that was EOL'd (I got the same email, but I don't use the product).  Sorry for the pain point for you.  Probably the engineers you were working with didn't see it coming, either.

Wow.  This is an extract from the PDF they provide via its link within that anouncement email as to why they have decided to do this:

Why is Symantec announcing the End of Life of Symantec Workspace Virtualization and Symantec Workspace Streaming?

Symantec is announcing the End of Life of Symantec Workspace Virtualization and Symantec Workspace Streaming to increase focus on its core security and management strategy. The impact of this move will be evident as early as the next release of ITMS in the first half of 2017, when a number of new and compelling capabilities will be introduced for the first time to Symantec Endpoint Management customers.

In the url: https://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/creating-win10-image-vmware-workstation you mentioned the CMS 8.0 HF4 is required. In my production environment I am still on 7.6 HF7; are there just advantages in having 8HF4 instead of 7.6HF7? Right now I have my first Windows 10 image built from build 10240 (found in msinfo32). I recently obtained 10 x64 Enterprise Build 1607 I did plan on a new image of 10 anyway. My first 10 image was preliminary and not perfect by any means. Again, it will be uploaded to the NS running 7.6 HF7. BTW, we will be on 8 sometime once we purchase a brand new server. I did not wnat to do an in place upgrade form 7.6 to 8 on a six year old server.

Does anyone have info on the big differences between build 1607 and 10240?

I was just going by the release notes for CMS 8.0 HF4 that mention adding support for win10 1607 - links to this doc

10240 is the initial release build of Windows 10. 1607 is the Anniversary release. There are issues in the 10240 related to imaging that causes issues with the menu's, etc. Microsoft Released fixes through updates to the product. 1607 doesn't have the same black screen issues. As to the suggested methods for getting the product ready for sysprep, in the build of 1607 I just installed, without running any updates, I still had to follow the instructions for removing the metro apps via powershell to allow Sysprep to function. I didn't test if it would work without following the instructions to disable the windows update services. I did that before i did the powershell removal of the metro apps.

In other words, on an unpatched (no updates), fresh install of 1607, I used both of the articles mentioned and was able to successfully capture a sysprepped Windows 10 image. (HOWTO125161, TECH223595).

My next step was to run all the latest updates and test again.

@russ  - what version of 1607 were you using?  I am curious what forced you to remove apps that didn't present an issue for me.  I was using edu, but I believe I tested enterprise as well.

At least here, the preferred method for image building is to touch the OS as little as possible (I am glad I didn't have to touch the metro apps).
