Database not found error

Symantec states this in the readme.txt for GSS v1.1:

    Upgrading the Console
    ---------------------
    Problem
When upgrading the Symantec Ghost Console you get the following
    database error message:
Sybase ODBC Driver Adaptive Server Anywhere Database server not
    found
    Cause
There is a race condition which prevents the database being
started after an upgrade. The upgrade has completed successfully.
    Solution
Restart the console machine after getting the eror message.

But then, after restarting the console machine the error is still there!! I have tried to uninstall the whole GSS and reinstall v1.1, but that did not solve the problem.

    Hi Ulrik,

Can you check the status of the following settings after installing GSS 1.1?

    - Are the services Symantec Ghost Database and Symantec Ghost Win32 Configuration Server started?

    - Does the file \Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\bin\rteng9.exe exist?

    - Check that a valid ODBC connection has been created. This can be done using the tool "Data Source (ODBC)" (ODBC Data Source Administrator) found in Control Panel -> administrative tools. There should be an entry named "Symantec Ghost" in the "System Data Sources" list under the "System DSN" tab, select the entry and click the "Configure" button. Does the configuration window appear?

    Cheers

    Hi Peter.
Yes, both the Symantec Ghost Database service and the Symantec Ghost Win32 Configuration Server service starts up when booting the PC. I can stop and restart them manually if I like, but when starting the "Symantec Ghost Win32 Configuration Server service" I get the error as stated on my earlier email.

Yes, the file \Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\bin\rteng9.exe does exists.

I don't know if the OBDC connection is valid, but I exists, and I can edit everything in it that I want. How can I check if it is valid?

    Hello Ulrik,

    please try the following steps:
    1. Start the Symantec Ghost Database Service (if it isn't running)
    2. Login to the database using \Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\bin\dbisqlc.exe.
    username: dba
    password: sql
    data source name: Symantec Ghost
    3. Try starting the Symantec Ghost Configuration Server while keeping the database connection open.

I would also like to find out what you mean by "tried to uninstall the whole GSS and reinstall v1.1". Did you uninstall the upgraded GSS 1.1, then:
    1. installed GSS 1.0 and tried upgrading to GSS 1.1 again?
    2. installed GSS 1.1 without installing GSS 1.0 first?

    Thank you and good luck!
    Aggie

    Hi Aggie.

When doing as you ask me to, I get the error "Database server not found" when logging on as dba.

This is what I have tried about installing/uninstalling:

    Installed GSS 1.0 (working)
Upgraded to GSS 1.1 (not working from this point - database server not found error)
    Uninstalled GSS 1.1
Installed GSS 1.1 (still not working)

Can you confirm that the Symantec Ghost Database Service is running (Started, not Starting) when you try to connect?

And does the file \Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\bin\dbserv.exe exist?

Yes, the Symantec Ghost Database Service is running (Started), and yes, the file
\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\bin\dbserv.exe exists, even though it is placed in \Programmer\Symantec\Ghost\bin\ since it is a Danish Windows XP I am running.
Do you know witch files should be seen in the process list in Task Manager when the database works OK?

Ahhh, now we're getting somewhere. The litlle tidbit about you running the Console on a Danish system is actually quite important!
OK, I've managed to install GSS 1.1 on a clean Windows XP Dannish system and have no problems connecting to the database. But here are a few things you can check:
    1. Go Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> ODBC
    2. Select System DSN and click Configure on Symantec Ghost
    3. Under Database tab check that the paths for Start line (should be something like: C:\Programmer\Symantec\Ghost\bin\dbserv.exe -start) and database file (C:\Programmer\Symantec\Ghost\db\SYMANTECGHOST.DB) are correct and that both checkboxes are checked
    4. Under Network tab you should have TCP/IP and Named Pipes checked
    5. Under Login tab try entering User id: dba and password: sql, then on the ODBC tab click Test Connection

The only thing I can think of other than the ODBC connection settings is that something in your policies is preventing the Console from connecting to the database server correctly. You should see the following processes in your Task Manager:
    1. dbserv.exe
    2. ngserver.exe
    3. rteng9.exe
    4. ngcons.exe (if Console is running)

    Hi again Aggie.
First off - thanks for trying to help.
I can verify all steps that you have mentioned (especially the paths - they are correct). Still when trying to Test Connection I get "Database server not found".
I see all 4 processes in the Task Manager.
I do have domain policies on the machine, but one of them relates to running special programs. Remember that GSS v1.0 was running fine.
Anyway, thanks for your help, but I guess I am pretty much back to zero.

    To the both of you,
I have exactly the same problem as is being investigated and is also running a Danish Windows XP.
I have tested and set all parameters as advised in this thread but to no avail.
The reason - I guess - for Ulrik to reinstal the GSS is to comply with a Knowledge Base reply from Symantec, which in my case was also the reason to remove the Checkmark for the database to not use TCP/IP. Re-Checking this option makes the machine think a bit longer than without the checkmark - but still it returns the described error: Database server not found.
I also ran the 1.0 without problems.

Did you come up with a solution?

    Best

    Kim
