I've done it with no problems, I would add a reboot ASAP I use altiris to prompt for reboot but give the user option to delay.

I run it with these switches below:

    /quiet /norestart /updates-no

We use altiris patch so disable updates to speed up the initial install.

Don't forget to test and then run several pilots that are small, representative portions of your environment.  Then move to production in a phased approach, gradually adding more systems with each pass.

I do /quiet /update-no /no-default (to not anger our Chrome or Firefox users) with /norestart, which lets me choose reboot behavior separately (via Altiris prompt or custom scripts we have).

If you want to customize the default settings, IEAK provides a way to do so.  Although I would recommend keeping customizations to a minimum.

Highly recommend you deploy XP SP3 prior to IE8.  If not, we found that hotfix KB932823 was needed.  Without it, our custom IE8 package would fail to install but return a success code.  Luckily we caught this during testing otherwise it would have been messy.  Note: The description of the hotfix does not mention this problem bit referemce to this hotfix missing was found in the verbose IE install logs.  Again, hotfix is NOT needed if machine is at SP3.

Hi, I've attached a document that details how we packaged IE and created a DS 6.9 job to deploy it to newly built computers.  I used the IEAK and also a custom script to work around a bug in the IEAK with the default search providor.

I hope it helps and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

    Regards,

    Darren.

On my initail test if I run it without the /quiet switch I get the prompts to install and it completes succesfully. If I stick on the quiet switch, it will deploy, but Last Status on the agent says Failure. If I reboot the machine I see that IE8  has been installed. Any ideas ?

    Return code 3010

3010 indicates a success but just means a reboot is required to complete the installation.   If you can add 3010 to the success codes of the package, it won’t show as a failed installation going forward.
