Storage Volumes is a generic term used by Windows to define anything that can have media "written to it". I.E. Flash Drives, Smart Phones (with internal drives- flash, SD, etc.) Also considered to be a storage volume would be anything externally connected via Fiber, ethernet or USB. Your external card readers will fall under this category.
Disk Drives, most liley are interpreted as Floppy and Optical drives. Some instances they may also be Hard Disk Drives. However, seeing as how you are not having problems with the system not loading the controllers/drives, likely only affecting optical/floppy.
