  • 1.  Difference between Deployment Solution for Server/Client.

    Hello,

I wonder if anyone can clarify this.
I see two version of Deployment Solution. One is Deployment Solution for Server and the other is Deployment Solution for Client.

Accroding to the Deployment Solution Data Shee, single deployment solution can handle desktops, servers and notebooks.
If this is true, what is these two versions for?

Another quesiton is about the Deployment Solution Client.
I see two versions of Client. One is "Deployment solution for clients basic" and the other is "Essential deployment solution for clients".
Anyone can help me to verify what is difference between these two clients?

    Thank you.

One solution can handle both, however, you have to be licensed for the machines that you are attempting to manage.

    bhawver, thanks for your clarification.

According to you,  whether I purchase the Deployment solution for server or client, it doesn't matter as long as I buy the license for machines I want to manage. Am I understand correctly?

    Then how about the client?

I am trying to purchase the Deployment solution.
The sales gave me two quotes for client.

Quote 1: Deployment solution for Clients basic.
Quote 2 : Essential deployment solution for clients.

The problem is sales person doesn't answer me what is the difference of these two clients.
As far as I know, Deployment Solution has only one kind of client - Aclient.

Does anybody knows about these client?

    Thank you.

Who are you dealing with?  A third party sales person or Altiris/Symantec directly?  When we purchased our licensing, we went direct to Altiris got the information that we needed and then Altiris worked with our preferred vendor to get the quote to us.

If you are working with a 3rd party vendor, I would suggest contacting Altiris/Symantec to get your questions answered directly.  Specifically ask them "What's the difference between Deployment solution for Clients basic and Essential deployment solution for clients?"  "What do I get with one vs. the other?"  Maybe even ask them to put it into a matrix so that you can compare them side by side.  Obviously, you don't want to buy something that you are going to find out later doesn't do what you expected it would do, but in the same aspect, you don't want to overspend on something that does way more than you would ever want it to do.

In regards to Deployment Solution Clients, there are 2 clients, but that should have nothing to do with quote.  DS has AClient and DAgent.  AClient is used for WinXP and lower and Win2003 and lower.  DAgent is used for Vista and Win2008 (can be used on XP and 2003, but I don't recommend it).

There is no difference in terms of the product whether you download the Server or Client version.

The license will determine what machines you are allowed to manage with DS.

100 Servers licenses will allow you to manage upto 100 Servers, but not Clients like XP.
100 Client licences will allow you to manage upto 100 Clients, but not Servers.

Your vendor is quoting you the license you need, but you have to decide which support model you want to pay for, Basic or Essential support. Odds are you want basic. Talking with Altiris Licensing (not always Sales) directly then having them work with your vendor on the quote is probably the best idea as mentioned already. Working with the vendor  directly on licensing questions is generally chaotic from my experiences.

    Basic: http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/enterprise/other_resources/ent-symc_basic_maintenance_data_sheet_10-2006.en-us.pdf
    Essential: http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/enterprise/other_resources/ent-symc_essential_support_data_sheet_10-2006.en-us.pdf

Also FYI, when you go to download DS from the website and you see "Deployment Solution for Server and Deployment Solution for Client" they are only asking so they give you the proper trial license with your download. The installer is the same on either one. Pretty confusing huh? Would seem easier to just make it one download with a trial license for each.

If you have deployment solution for clients and you have 100 licenses, you are able to manage servers with these licenses as well.
But you are not allowed to.
There is no difference in software and also not in the licenses. DS for servers can manage clients and ds for clients can manage servers.
    But again.
If you want to be covered for licenses, make sure you have the correct ones.
