  • 1.  Difference Between Flash Player Patch from MS vs Adobe?

    Posted Mar 21, 2018 08:24 PM

This month I see MS18-03-AFP from Microsoft and APSB18-05 from Adobe; both for Flash Player.  Does anyone know what the difference is between these 2 updates?  You'd think they're different or else why would MS and Adobe be offering the exact same update in Patch Management Solution.  Just trying to figure out whether I've been wasting my time (and storage space) pushing out both.  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Clint,

Checked up on this and it appears they're exactly the same. Check below for the versions that the patches address:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/flash-player/apsb18-05.html

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4088785/security-update-for-adobe-flash-player

My personal preference would be to push everything out with Patch Management Solution and keep it all managed and applied from 1 location.

    Thanks!

I disagree that they are the same in the eyes of patch management.  They're kept the same version just like Chrome keeps their embedded version up to date with Adobe's stand alone installer.

My remediation center reports win10 clients as needing MS18-03-AFP but those win10 machines are not applicable for APSB18-05.

Any win7 client that needs Flash working in IE is going to need APSB18-05.  If you're not pushing out flash (lucky you!) other than built into win10, I'd think MS18-03-AFP should be good for you.  Your applicability for each patch should give you an idea of what your scoped machines need.

I'll never understand why Microsoft chose to embed Flash (end of life 2020) into their operating system.
