  • 1.  Dynamic filters based on custom reports

    Posted Apr 02, 2011 12:26 PM

I'm new to SMP and trying to deploy SP3 on a few remaining workstations. I created a GUI report to grab any machines without SP3 and created a filter based on the report. However after a machine gets updated and the report is updated, my problem is that the filter does not get updated. Is there any workaround or fix for this.

    thanks

Nevermind I think I got it.

Are there any links for improving report or filter creations.

I am currently experiencing the same issues where I would create filters and they do not update automatically.

Is the filter attached to an active policy?  If not, it will not update automatically.  You can create a policy that doesn't really do anything and apply it to that filter, as long as the policy is on that filter will be udpated.

I will try that, and report. thanks

By the way, I love how the old NS 6.0 collections used to show all kinds of good information like IP, Domain, Last user logon etc.  Do you know where i can find information to get this info back, and perhaps create a template?  or do you have a filter does have the fields you can share?

I don't think you can get additional fields in a filter (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

You can make reports with this info, though.  Sometimes it's a little bit of a pain to find the data class you are looking for, but you could make a report with all of the things you want to be shown and create new reports off of that by cloning it.

You can use the query builder and go to the Field tab, which will let you search through a good portion of the data classes.  Just start typing a words like logon or IP or whatever, and see what results come up.  You'll most likely get a list of matches and from there it's kind of trial and error running the report to see if it gives you what you want.

You can also look at the inventory data classes by going to Settings > All Settings  and expand Notification Server > Resource and Data Class Settings > Data Classes > Inventory and from there, look through subfolders to find a class name that may match what you're looking for.  You can also try looking around the forums for people who may have already tried to track down a data class that you're looking for.

Sometimes I just hop onto SQL management studio and connect to the Altiris SQL database and try to build out reports that way.  If you're into writing SQL queries, I think this is probably the quickest way to wade through the data classes to find the one you want.

I've also had a lot of luck just looking at canned reports in NS 7.0.  I just look around in the existing reports for a report that contains the information that I want.  Then I clone it so that I can edit it and look at the query to see what data class the information comes from - this is probably one of the easier ways that I know of to track things down if you can find a report w/the info you're looking for.
