  • 1.  Email Size increases after passing through Brightmail

What is the Brightmail overhead in handling email, I send an email with 750k size, and then receive it as 1MB.  Almost 35% overhead!!!

Is this the way Brightmail work?  Or is it exponentially larger?

    Please advise.

Can you please provide the size precisely in bytes, before and after?

There will definitely be some increase in size due to addition of recived headers and other tracking headers by every relay that's handling the mail before it gets to your inbox.  Even your mail server (exchange) will add it's own headers to the message.  Transformation of message encoding may also affect the size.

I just sent   Outlook -> Exchange_1 -> SBG_A -> Exchange_2 -> SBG_B -> Exchange_1  and the messages stayed the same size.   As AdnanH mentioned attachments need to be encoded and often can increase the message size.  E-Mail is text protocol, so anything that is binary (images, programs) needs to be converted to characters that can be sent as text.
