I uninstalled Endpoint client from a workstation.  Complely and rebooted so as I could show some of my helpers how the installations looked.

For installation files I exported a package unchecking the use a single exe file option.  I then copied the files to a CD and clicked the setup.exe.

After about 60 seconds the install progresss dialogue rolled back without any discernable error codes.  I used the windows installer utility to see if their were any remanants and ccleaner to clean up reg entries, tried again and nothing happened again except for the Event ID 11708 in my application log.

Any one else have somthing like this?  The machine is an XP service pack 3 with all updates as of today.

    Hi,
you can check for sep_inst.log for more details for the installation faiilure. Search keywork "return value 3" , somewhere above or below this line you will have reason of failure.

By looking into the event id I could dig this information in the KB

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007101109115348

    Pete!

please check sep_inst.log file in %temp% or c:\windows\temp folder.

look for "return value 3" - lines above should tell you what's the problem with installation.

Did that and it is referring to live update.  I put in a ticket to symantec and spent almost 2.5 hours on the phone to no avail  We are going to tray again Monday.  It seems like it is something on my machine though.

uninstall LiveUpdate from the machine. then install LU from CD and then try installing SEP itself. don't knwo why but sometimes it happens.
other option is to use CleanWipe and then try to install SEP (you can obtain CleanWipe from Symantec support).

Done that (both)----- Downloaded newest SEP first.

    Hmmm... interesting.
You did not indicate OS version SP and build, so here is a generic.

    If you are suspecting something on the machine, and something is blocking/interfering with the installation of LU;

Have you tried using the Windows System Configuration Utility; also known as MSCONFIG?

In MSCONFIG you can, from the Startup tab, choose to disable all applications and processes being called during the startup of your system.

See, if after doing this, you can install LU.  If so, something installed/running is interfering with the install.  If you stil cannot install LU after disabling everything at startup, you are most likely looking at an OS issue.

Have you verified your Disk?  Chkdsk /X [drive_letter]

If it is an OS issue, you could also try doing a "repair" of Windows using the same disc that was used for installation.  This can be problematic, as I don't know of any CDs that ship With SP3 (if applicable) in which case, you would need to slipstream the service pack into an Install CD.  NLite is great for this and it's free.

If you opt to "repair", it's not the first repair option of the Bootup from the CD, from console, you want to skip over that one, and choose to install, it will detect your OS and give you another option for repair.  That will return the core files to what they should be based on the CD versions.
