    Hi All

This is my 1st post so sorry if I'm in the wrong place.

    I need know whether it is possible to install Endpoint Protection 11.0.4 onto Windows Server 2008 R2 Core. I can find info on most other editions in relation to EPP 11 but nothing on R2 core. Upon ringing Symantec technical support, they told me it "should" work  which wasn't good enough for my employer. So i guess my questions are;

1: Is it possible to install Endpoint Protection 11.0.4 onto Windows Server 2008 R2 Core
2: And if so, can someone point me to some documentation on how to go about doing it

Please note the Windows Server 2008 R2 Core we are using is a 64bit edition

    Thanks in advance.

    Champski

This is certainly the right place to post.  You'll really should use RU5 for 2008 R2 support.  I haven't tried RU5 on 2008 R2 core yet.  But we have done 2008 R2 with RU5 and have done MR4 with 2008 Core just fine.  You just run the installer from the command line and install as usual.  Once it is installed, its easiest to get information about the machine's SEP install via SEPM.  Of course, also make sure you use the x64 version.

Keep in mind, this is for the SEP client only, I don't know if SEPM can run on Core.  The release notes say "all versions except Itanium," so my guess would be that it works.

Release notes for RU5 are here.

Everything that was said above is absolutely correct. Just wanted to say that 11.0.4 will install just fine, but you should install it silently instead of using the interactive mode. Below is a cut from the release notes of 11.0.2. I did not see this same warning in the 11.0.4 edition so maybe the interactive mode will work, but in case you do see an error just install using the command line. Hope this helps.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BEST PRACTICE: Deploy silent installation packages on computers that run Microsoft Vista or Windows 2008 Server
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you add installation packages to a group or export installation packages, you can select the Interactive mode (feature) so that users can interact with the installation or upgrade. However, interactive installations fail on the following operating systems:

    - 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 2008 Core
    - 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 2008 Full
    - 64-bit Windows Vista, Service Pack 0 or 1

For these operating systems you must use silent or unattended installation packages.

Thank you both for clarifying this for me.

    Very much appreciated

I created an install package.  A single .EXE for a 64 bit processor.  Then I run the .EXE it starts and runs for a while and then the "progress" bar which was moving from left-to-right reverses direction.  I assume it is backing out of the install.

I'm running SEPM Version 11.0.5002.333 and used it to create the install package.

I am logged onto the server under an accout that has domain-admin priviliges and run the .EXE by right-clicking and choosing "Run as Administrator"

    The server firewall is OFF

When I examine the install log SEP_INST in C:\Users\jpompano\AppData\Local\Temp\2 I see a lot of information but cannot determine why the install is failing.

    I've attached the SEP_INST.TXT file

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jim

    LiveUpdate registration failed. (HRESULT=-2147221164)

Installation rolls back, and log reports LiveUpdate registration failed

Install liveupdate first then install SEP. it will install fine.
