  • 1.  False error on AVDEF update install

    I would like verification from the community that the error I am getting while attempting to update laptops loaded with Windows XP and Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.6000.550 is due to the fact that we have not updated to SEP 12. After the update is executed, the error is:

    “Intelligent Updater session complete.  All updates failed to install on the machine.  For more details about the processing, please check the log file "Log.IntelligentUpdater.txt" created in the user's temporary directory.”

    Opening SEP, the status is green and the AVDEF file is shown as the updated file.

    Can anyone verify that I am correct with my assumption? Am I protected sufficiently? I will provide text from the log file if needed. THanks.

    SEP 11.x is end of support life and no longer recives updates.

    You need to get to 12.1 as soon as possible.

    I understand and we are working the upgrade. The question I have is that when I open SEP the status is green and the update file is listed. Is that False? Am I protected?

    Nope it should be correct and you're protected.

    SEP 11.x is EOSL, however, it is still possble that from time to time it can update. Keep in mind these are untested, unsupported definitions so you're taking a chance in the case something goes wrong.

    But, you are currently protected.

    Your SEP 11.x clients can take only AV updates from the SEPM 12.1.x and you cannot update PTP & IPS for SEP clients. Also the other methods like intelligent updater, LUA, or direct Symantec live update servers for updating AV pattern in SEP 11.x is out of question. that is the reason you are receiving this error.

    • Endpoint Protection 11.0.x clients will no longer be able to download updates from Symantec LiveUpdate or an internal LiveUpdate Administrator.
      • Endpoint Protection 11.0.x clients can still obtain virus definitions from a 12.1.x Endpoint Protection Manager. This is not a recommended or supported configuration, and should only be considered to maintain protection while completing the upgrade to SEP 12.1.x.
      • Intrusion Prevention, Proactive Threat Protection and all other content will not be available for download through any means.
